I'm getting really depressed again. Luckily I will go and see my psychiatrist/md on monday. Even though that feels very far away.
I'm so negative that I'm almost suicidal.
I have no insurance, but I've heard there's now a generic prozac, anyone knows how much that can cost?
before I took zoloft for 2 years or so.
I'm new to this place.
thanks

hi xljuce,

how was your day? i didn't know that there was a generic form of prozac. i put "cost of generic prozac" in a search engine and got a lot of pages, but none that said exactly what it costs (plus, it depends on milligrams) but they pretty much all said it would be anywhere from 25% to 40% less than name-brand prozac.

page shows prices for both at 20 mg.

now, this info i'm providing doesn't mean that it's what the doctor may prescribe. are there any programs in your area that can help pay for medicines? it might be worth asking your doctor. sometimes, they know.

hope you are feeling better.

I'm not sure where you are from xljuce, but I know that in Canada, where I live you do have the right to ask the pharmacy to supplement a name brand drug for a less expensive generic brand, if one does exist. I don't see any reason why that wouldn't apply elsewhere, check with a pharmacy.

Hi Xljuce, Welcome to the forums. I hope coming here will also help your depression. The people here are concerned and very willing to help as you can see already. I called my nearby pharmacies to check out the price of a medicine earlier this year. They all were helpful and gladly gave the prices so you can probably do the same thing where you live. I would do it for you but prices vary upon pharmacy and location so I would not be accurate. I'm not sure that the generic is out yet but maybe so. Best wishes for your recovery! Like everything else I know it takes time. I just started on a new antidepressant myself and have to slowly increase so it will be awhile for me to see the results, too. I try to keep busy but I know that it can be difficult to function at that time. Also, I suggest you call your local hotline or emergency or your doctor right away if you begin to feel suicidal. You need immediate help when you feel that way and that's why I suggested those things. I hope you will continue to post here and let us know how it's going. I look forward to hearing from you again. You are not alone and there are people who care.

I went to see my md/psychiatrist, and he said he will be able to get some pills for me, he said you can get deals from the drug company. I don't know how....
So I will take zoloft instead, I did take that before.
This doctor is very helpful and kind to me, I'm so lucky I have him, he is also going to help me get affordable therapy. Since I'm unemployed I can't afford much-if anything. But seems like I'm taken care of.
Thank you so much for your replies, I really appreciate it.
I will be coming back here.

I know there are free drug programs initiated by the drug companies. There are links to them on the internet, too. Your doctor already seems to know about that and will probably help you out that way. I'm taking Zoloft now, too. I haven't had any bad effects yet and that's unusual for me. If that works for you why not stay with it? Maybe you have a reason though for wanting a different one. Best wishes!

The simplest way to get info on the drug company programs is www.needymeds.com . The easiest antidepressant to get is Lexapro. It is a simple one-page form, does not require proof of income, and about 2-3 weeks later you get a free 3-month supply of medication. You can continue to apply and receive meds indefinitely. Forest Labs (the manufacturer) is a reliable company and unlikely to suddenly stop the program, and Lexapro is probably the best tolerated anti-depressant there is in my opinion. If you only need 10mg (the starting dose) your doctor can write for 20mg and you can break the pill in half and have a 6 month supply (just don't tell them I told you this). It is a brand name medicine so you don't have to worry about the 20% plus or minus rule the generics are allowed to work under.

Have you looked on NAMI's website? They have some drug assistance programs that are sponsored by the pharmaceutical companies. Prozac might be one of them.

Good luck!
Kimberly.
