i wonder if there's a safe AD out there for someone who has shown poor results in the past with AD's...does anyone know?
AD's in the past have put me on the couch...literally...it's like they built up in my body or something and i would get to the point of almost non-functioning. i know most ppl don't do this, but i do. i also know there are alot of new ones out there now. i'm wondering if there's something available today that might help the dysthymia, anxiety and poor focus, but allow me to function? i've always thought i was ADD. t says no...that it's hypervigilence. i don't think we'll ever agree on that one. everything i've read about ADD points to my experience, but it's a confusing line when you have PTSD and are dissociative ![]() oh well, just wondering guys... thanks,

Hi kimmy,
I am kind of medication sensitive, although AD's have not affected me the way you describe. There have been some recent breakthroughs in studying genes that have identified certain types of markers that relate to how our liver enzymes process psychotropic meds. The more of this genetic marker someone has, the easier the liver proceses it. You may be someone with fewer of the enzymes, so the AD builds up in your system. Could you tolerate a lower dose and still get the AD effect? I've recently been trying milk thistle, which is supposed to improve liver function. I started this since I am on an MAOI, and I've gained a ton of weight. My hypothesis is that I've got some impaired glucose tolerance due to the MAOI, and that if my liver function gets more efficient, maybe I'll process glucose better and not put on so much weight. At any rate, it doesn't seem to hurt to take it for two week intervals. You might want to try it the next time you try an AD, if you are not allergic to the ingredient (mine has milk thistle extract, dandelion, licorice, and fennel). The bottle says do not use if you are allergic to the daisy/ragweed family. Okay, enough rambling. Good luck and I hope you find something that works. gg

Kimmy, what does your pdoc say about this? That's where I'd start. OR maybe by talking with a pharmacy about some suggestions that you could present to your pdoc. I don't know much about meds so I'm probably not much of a help. I'd think the lower dose thing sounds like a good idea. Hope you find the answer you're looking for. Take care.

I can really relate to antidepressants making you sick. Either they don't do jack, or they make me sick, but that's only my experience. I've always thought that I had ADD also (It's soooo hard to pay attention, I always fidget, etc.), but I haven't responded well at all to stimulants (adderall, ritalin). I'm still tryin' to find the right cocktail, though!
good luck sweetie ![]() -Carolyn. |

Kimmy,
I recently read an article about meds that are recommended for people who are either treatment resistant or hyper-sensitive to meds. If I can find it, I'll send it along to you. Please take good care of you, Greg |
