deli made it into psych honours!!!!!!!!

there has been some doubt about whether my uni would accept me as a part time student (they've only accepted 2 part timers in the past 7 years) and so i'd approached a prof to ask if he wouldn't mind looking over my research proposal that i would be sending with my application to other unis. we only had a very brief chat about my ideas and he asked me to email him to set up a proper time to discuss it thoroughly after the break.

anyway, he sent me an email back this week saying he'd spoken to the hons coordinator and she has agreed to support my application for pt status! he asked me to keep it quiet because official offers only go out in mid-december, but he was telling me now so i didnt waste my time applying elsewhere. he's proposed that we meet up now to discuss what "we" will be doing instead.

beyond the fact that this is what i've been working towards for the past 7 bloody years, i'm actually really delighted because i have never spoken to this prof before - he has given a guest lecture or 2 in one of my previous subjects, but he knows absolutely nothing about me apart from the research topic i mentioned and that i was applying elsewhere because of the impossibility of getting a part time placement at my uni. so it must mean he thought my idea was good, and that means so so so much to me, because i've always worried that i get concessions made for me because my lecturers know who i am and like me as a student, as opposed to believing in me academically.

he also sent me a paper to introduce me to the area in more depth, and (oh gosh, how embarrassing) it turns out he's one of the 2 foremost experts in this field. i would never, never, never have approached him if i had known. he's very young so i'd assumed it was just something he was interested in, not something he's helped define.

anyway. so now i'm nervous. need to not look like an idiot next month - HELP!!

but also yayayayayayay!~!!!! i dont have anyone else to tell right now, so you kids are #1 to know.

That is totally amazing Deli! What did pdoc and Austin-t say? They must be proud of "their" student.

Id love to hear what your research ideas are! Does it include online psych patients from all over the globe?
Thanks for this!

So, Deli. I'm yawning and sleeping because I'm not surprised, nor are any of us. Your intelligence shines through every time you write. We think the world of you. But of course it's a event to cause one to:
celebrate
smile
dance
exclaim

high five

sing

Hip-Hip-Hooray!!!!

i'll leave it until i see them next . i want to see their reactions when i do tell. pdoc is going to die (95% happiness/5% oh no, another 2 years of study); austin-T will get all excited and down to business of what my research topic will be, how to prepare for it etc. he used to be a biology teacher so he will probably tutor me through the whole thing (neuroscience isn't one of my strengths but my research is heavily based on it, and that is what his phd is on).

i didnt mention it earlier because it's such an "unsexy" topic and most ppl (including myself, until i studied it) dont even realise it's a part of psychology.

it's to do with vision, and how our brains construct what we perceive under circumstances of ambiguity. e.g., everyone has a blind spot in each eye, but we don't actually notice that any information is missing (e.g., we dont see a big black spot) when we look around the world because our brains kind of "make up" the missing information and fill it in for us. understanding how our brains construct images would be really useful in terms of medical research e.g., with macular degeneration - where ppl dont realise they're going blind because their brains keep making up more and more info to fill in the bits that their eyes can't see anymore.

would be glad to involve both of you if you wouldn't mind looking at a few optical illusions and letting me conduct a few brain scans while you do it! you'll only have to sit still for about 2-4hrs, and you will have to pay your own way to australia, but i can offer you a sandwich?

thank you, ((amazonmom)).

i still havent told anyone else yet - probably tell my friends when i see them on sunday, but i think i'll let my family know when i get the official offer. i tried to tell mum as soon as i found out but she cut me off so she didnt find out. i havent told them about my scholarship either. it feels weird, but i know it's better for me to not try with them so much.
