People often use the words interchangeably, but technically they're not the same. Levels of training can be different, for one thing. Therapists have specific training requirements. Counselors can be pretty much anything.

What specifically do you want to know?

i find that counseling is where you talk and they listen, not advice or anything. Therapy is guidance, advice, help, and lots more.

I was just wondering whether I could talk about it in here?

Do you mean, can you talk about counseling-related things here in this psychotherapy forum?

Sure, go ahead.

of course, i think any talking treatments can be discussed in this part of the forum, regardless of theory, technique, intensity, frequency etc.

I think imo that psychotherapy is a talk therapy that is intense goes deeper and more into the past where as counselling is more just focussed on solving the here and now problems. There are shorter therapies like solution based therapy, and cognitive therapy and then there are the long term therapy like psychodynamic and psychoanalytical therapy.

I don't think the terminology matter so much, and certainly you can talk about your experiences in this forum.

the two words mean the same thing here and are used interchangably. you go to a mental health agency and sit with a therapist /counselor (again here the two words mean the same type of person and are used interchangably) tell them your problems and work with that person to fix your problems. the kind of work depends on the problem and what ways work for you.

I tend to use the words interchangeably.

Say what you want to say, Bryony. Healing is a process. If it helps the process to talk about the sessions, please do.

Well - I had a counselor in college for many years. He was not qualified to give me a DX. But he helped save my life in many ways. He was college funded - so the tuition paid for services. Man was I thankful for the teacher who set me up with seeing him. I would have had no idea that service was available to me as a student!

Now I have a T. He is qualified to make DX. And he acts a little different... the counselor could tell me stuff about what he did over the weekend if I asked him about it first. That was not crossing any lines. But T is brisk about answers of a personal nature and sends the focus back to me.
