Do any of you do this? My sister has a book about it and I kind of skimmed through it and it looked interesting. I know when I have been inpatient they did it periodically and I enjoyed it. I know when I was in a hospital in Little Rock they did it every day and I learned how to mosiac and really enjoyed doing that. I stopped by my apartment yesterday and picked up a notebook to start journalling by doing art therapy. The way my sister does it is by cutting up magazines and putting them together by using the pictures in her journal there is a specific name for what she does but I can't remember it right now and she isn't here so I can't ask her. Her pages are amazing though. I did one last night and had fun doing it and am happy with the way it turned out. I can see me doing this more than with just scrapbooking. So just wondered if any of you do Art therapy as part of your therapy.

Sounds like your sister does collage making? I like that http://www.collageart.org/

I've always been fascinated with art therapy, music thrapy, poetry therapy, etc. I'm "afraid" of art, my T and I even discussed that a little bit. She gave me some modeling clay one session and it freaked me out as I didn't know what to "make" with it, how to proceed. But it turned out to be really helpful talking about that and working with the clay; I gave her some "modeling soap" as a kind of gag, Christmas gift that year:

jbug, my daughter does this with her therapist, who is certified in art therapy. They don't do art therapy every week but many times they do. Often times they work on a joint art project together, or work on art side by side (but each do their own). Sometimes they paint, or do collages, or build things (intricate and whimsical structures). They talk about what they are creating as they do it, or talk about other topics while their hands are occupied by the art. For one thing, it can help take the pressure off to talk when you are sitting there face to face with the therapist and don't know what to say or how to respond. It can be easier (for some) to get into a conversation while they are working on something. My daughter does not do art projects at home as part of this. They just do it in session. I think what you describe about incorporating art into your journal sounds great! Sometimes I write poems in my journal and sometimes I search the Internet for pictures or photos that encapsulate an image I am seeing in my mind, or a feeling I am having, and I insert these into my journal. Let us know how it goes.

I have done it. It is another way to allow my right brain to access the emotions that are often buried. One of my favorite things to do when stressed is to just hold a crayon in my left hand and let "it" move and draw whatever comes out. I am often amazed at how this can access my inner truth.

this looks like a great book because it seems to have simple ideas to get you started. i got an art journalling book and it's really nice, but i think i need something a bit more basic so i'm not so intimidated to actually do it. the book i got is art journals and creative healing: restoring the spirit thru self-expression and the artwork is very well-done.

I will have to see if my library has this book. It looks like a good one to read and get inspired by. Thanks for sharing.

I have an art journal I bring to my weekly sessions to share with my therapist. She is always willing to look at it; sometimes the art speaks for what I cannot verbalize.

I think if you enjoy it then do it. I know for me I had (have) a hard time verbalizing stuff and working out my thoughts visually on paper has been really healing. IDK it gets me out of my head and into my hands.

In this is my first time posting here so I hope I'm doing this right. I am the author of the book journal bliss – I have a google alert for journal bliss out so I found the site. Anyways I just wanna say that I'm happy you're enjoying my book. Art journaling is a very therapeutic way of processing what is going on in your life in a very nonthreatening manner. There really are no rules to art journaling – you can doodle, you can collage or simply paint and then add words afterwards. If you go to my website (see above) and check the tutorials on the right hand side bar you can view some step by step art journaling instructions. Also if you go to youtube and type in the name creativeboho you'll see that I have some free how to tutorials there too.
I have some free tutorials on creativity portal as well – step by steps. I hope you will try out art journaling – it literally saved my life! Please feel free to e-mail me or visit my blog. Just google violette and you will find me!

Wow welcome to PC. I feel great and honored to have brought you to PC. I read your book when my sister showed it to me. My mom is reading it as we speak. I did another page today and plan on showing it to my therapist tomorrow..she is always asking me if I have done anymore on my cross stitch or scrapbooked lately so I think she will really be on board with me doing this.

I like this statement. I think my inner child who first broke through my silence and expressed herself via drawing. Since then I've been able to work through a lot of different issues/emotions/thoughts via art. As stuff first started to come out, I can't say it wasn't threatening to me personally. Some of the images I created i had to immediately put in a folder for a while before I was ready to view and try and understand them. Now however the images I create have slowly changed as I've processes and come to terms with my past. It is nice sometimes to put the drawing in order to see how I've changed.
