Ok so I have been thinking about asking my therapist to do something for me but was afraid to ask, simply because it felt so childish. She is really flexible in what she does for me but it takes me forever to ask. So I did today. I asked if she could read 2 of my favorite children's books and tape them for me. It would help immensely when I am away from her especially when we need to miss a session. She has written letters for me to have and read when I am feeling that fear of abandonment but having her voice recorded will be great and she said that she would be glad to do it and that I should not wait so long to ask her next time. Great session and the hug at the end made me feel safe. She is amazing.
Thanks for this!

Hey Cmac.

That is totally awesome. I'm glad that you finally asked her.

cmac, that is so awesome! May I suggest if you can that you have her read them in session and ask her if you can tape her reading them in session. That way you actually can watch her face as she reads them and you will have that to add to the experience as you listen to the replay.
Thanks for this!

That's a great idea, cmac!Your T sounds great for you! Would you mind sharing what your favorite children's books are? I love kids' books.

ok she is going to tape herself reading THE RUNAWAY BUNNY by Margaret Wise Brown and THE GIVING TREE by Shel Silversteen.
She also mentioned the book THE VELVETEEN RABBIT and that is another favorite of mine and ARE YOU MY MOTHER? was another one I was considering to bring in for her to read but I thought that would be too much to ask of her. Although knowing her she probably would have done it

ooh, I used to read Runaway Bunny to my kids all of the time. I like the others too. More "cuddly" books like that are Little Fur Family and the Little Bear series.

Maybe you can ask her to tape the others another time. It gives me a cozy feeling that your T is doing this for you. Enjoy!

She knows that this is real important to me...to have her voice on tape to listen to when I am feeling real vulnerable and scared.

that is so cool. I am glad you finally mustered up the courage to ask. My ex t used to go away a lot, often for over a month at a time, and she came up with the idea to read books on tape for us on her own. Thank god, cause I never could have asked! it is nice to be able to be connected to an absent t in this way.
