This is something that is quite embarrassing, but I wondered if any of you have experienced this. What if I have to go to the bathroom during a session? When your stomach is in knots, you know what can happen! I worry about how I will handle this.

If all you need to do is tee-tee, that is one thing. But if you have made yourself a nervous wreck, you may be in the bathroom the rest of your session! What would you say to your therapist? "I need to go and do my business? Or, I need to take a crap?"

I am laughing myself silly writing this. It is quite humerous, but it can be a real issue in therapy!!

(I hope this is not against any of the forum rules)
Thanks for this!

If ya gotta go, ya gotta go. I have excused myself to the bathroom before.

Yep, When you gotta go, you gotta go. I have been so stressed that it's not something you can hold.....there can be times when there is NO CHOICE. You just need to say.....that sometimes your body reacts to being stressed with diarrhea & you really need to go to the bathroom. I have noticed that when we are honest about what is happening to us, so many others actually relate & we realize that we aren't alone.....even with out T's. You can bet that your T has sometime in the past been is a stressful situation & her body has responded in the same way.

I remember being in college & even stressing myself out about finals, let alone dealing with presentations......I would be sure that she would definitely relate to your situation if it should ever arise.

I have a digestive illness, and before it was diagnosed and I got it under control one of the things I would have was diarrhea. There were a couple of sessions where I had to step out to take care of business. My T didn't mind and she understood. One time I was gone so long she got out a book to read (I didn't mind).

I have been laughing myself silly ever since I posted this. At least it is calming my nerves down. I have my appointment in 2 hours. I wonder what happens if you don't make it to bathroom!!!

Maybe I need to wear a diaper? I wonder if she would notice anything...like the smell!!!! My, my, I am laughing myself to the potty! I am not making fun of anyone who may have some type of medical issue. I am laughing at myself because my stomach is torn up worrying about this blasted session today!!

Oh dear once again Squiggle!! You sure are getting yourself worked up about this, I don't think that you will need a diaper. lol. I am sure you will make it in time if you need to go. Maybe prepare her, tell her your gut is in a bit of distress and you may need to suddenly bolt to ease your pain, Best of luck! lol.

Since I have 90 minute sessions and I have a tendency to need the bathroom due to nervousness, too, my T knows I have to go. It's been pee, not poop, but I used to have IBS very bad so there's always that possibility. I eat lightly before my session. Try banana or rice. I tell my T my stomach hurts, too. She's always asking where in my body I feel something, which I hate talking about, but it makes it easier to say when I have to use the bathroom. Only problem is that it's out the door and down the hall, and I hate to waste the time. But if you have to go, you have to go. T would understand! I also suggest taking Pepto or something ahead of time. I used to do that before parties and stuff, and still keep it with me!

Me neither.

I, anyway, usually go to bathroom before going out somewhere I have to stay for more than an hour or so. I think that, in the case I'd feel a really, really unbearable belly pain, I would say I have to go home as I feel sick... I can barely pee in a public bathroom, figure you doing the big thing!

Please take care of your needs! You won't get a lot out of the session if you're focused on needing to use the bathroom (if its that urgent). I work with a lot of kids, so they make it very clear "Miss Stormy, I HAVE to go potty!" and it's like OK! Go, go, go. Not as often with my adults, but it happens to all of us!

As long as only Farmergirl thinks this thread is TMI (I think this thread is great) I want to say that I am always scared that my T will be in the bathroom the same time as me. But I told her I couldn't handle that, so she won't. She's never left a session, but once before we started she told me she'll be right back for that reason. I don't think I could be a T unless I had a very convenient bathroom! I don't know how teachers last all day long, either! I guess Ts are human too, LOL.

Ugh, I know what you guys mean. I have IBS too and I pray that this doesn't happen to me :P ...as far as I know, I've only left once, and that was to pee. I try to do the other beforehand (coming prepared?)

I have experienced this firsthand... Once my T asked to excuse himself during session for that very reason. ( I think he was quite embarrassed) I sat there on a couch in his office not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

He came back and offered me more time. I love grace.
Thanks for this!

lol!!

Every Single Session for about 2.5 years I would be a nervous wreck driving into the session, and would dash up to the bathroom before the session. I did it whether it would make me a minute or two late. I had to go!! I never told my T this. This is a bathroom in the waiting area, and I am usually the only person there because its so early. WHEW.

So, I suppose I got my business taken care of ahead of time Though if I did have to go in the middle of the session (and i've told her a few times when I was really nervous that my stomach hurt), I would just be like "Hey, T...got to take a bathroom break." And then come back. No need to know exactly what was going on in there!

How did I miss this thread????? (wanted to write threat )
Sorry to push it up again.

I have IBS and the day of my session is nearly every time a busy day re: the bathroom I really, really hope this will never happen as I will be gone for a while and that would be the most embarrassing thing in a long, long time.
I mean, imagine T would go check on you... ask whether you're fine or something.

Sorry, couldn't resist adding my 2 cents to this

sailboat, what if you tell your T you have this problem? Every session I tell my T I have to go to the bathroom (pee, not poop) and I do. I can never sit the whole time. She knows it's because I'm anxious, and even though it's been over a year now that I've been seeing her, I have to "go" even after I already did when I first got there. She even told me: but you just went, and say but I still do! Sorry, this is TMI but my point is that like any other subject, I think it's something to tell T and then you won't be as embarrassed. I also have IBS but it's under control now. If not, I'd just tell my T.
Thanks for this!

She knows already and I don't think she'd be weird about it but I would be.
She knows I have IBS and we talk about it quite a lot because it's not just therapy that creates this kind of issue.

Peeing is fine, I'm a nervous pee-er too but honestly, I'd be gone for a while (sorry, TMI but it does bother me)
