I told my T that I could relate to symptoms of bipolar II disorder. My T said that labels can be helpful if they help guide the T work. I am sure he wouldn't be drawn into saying more than this, but now I am really wondering if this is what he thinks I have. I thought all my symptoms were reactions to negative life events, but now I am wondering whether it is because I do have BP II.............

Cat's are great - mine is called Kiko and he really knows how to chill me out...So do you think that I may get a staight answer from my T, rather than a why is it important to know, what difference would it make, etc...

If your T isn't a psychologist or MD, he won't dx you. You'll need a pdoc to do that.

Symptoms aren't what's wrong with us, just symptoms! But no illness "causes" certain behavior, you aren't destined to choose not to get up and shower just because you're severely depressed; choosing to get up and shower is just a whole lot harder when you're depressed. Bipolar disorder can skew some of your impulses but doesn't determine your behavior, only you can do that.

I agree symptoms aren't what's wrong with us. But I spend a lot of time getting really frustrated with myself, I hate feeling like I do and can't seem to find a way of "pulling myself together" - so I suppose if I had a label I would at least understand why it is so difficult (rather than impossible) for me to control my mood. I spend so much time trying to do things. I am actually doing some studying at the moment and the only way I can concentrate is by using a highlighter and doing a few minutes at a time, it is a huge effort and I am battling with just sitting and focusing on the spinning in my head.
