she asked me if I wanted to be happy and I told her, most of the time, I just want to not be sad. so she gave me this assignment - to list 100 things that bring me joy. one thing I mentioned was the taste of sweet, juicy watermelon. haven't thought of anything else yet.

so I wanted to pass this along to all of you - maybe it'll be helpful to thing about when having a rough moment, day or whatever...

what brings you joy??

My therapist asked me this once, and I said "What do you mean by 'joy'? Can you define it?" And he said "...most people wouldn't respond like that."

...thanks T!

But it made me do some thinking, and my horses are on the top of the list, for sure. For me, there's nothing that makes me as happy as the way we seem to just "get" each other --like inter-species communication It feels magical.

A few that come to mind: walking on the beach while it's hailing; quiet sea kayaking watching the egrets; considering learning to box (I saw a woman at the gym today practicing punching and it seemed like fun (I wouldn't want to receive any punches though); writing poetry at the coffee shop; solitary walking the streets of Madrid or Paris or Asheville or Vancouver; hiking the Appalachian trail; sampling exotic foreign cuisine; dancing with my shadow; studying Hindi; diving deep into the clear blue water; rocking with Janis Joplin; enjoying the scent of jasmine while lolling in my hammock; tai chi; being confused by quantum physics (it's fun to explore what can't be understood); cross country road trips; slaughtering a foreign language and we all laugh hysterically about it; long ferry rides/smelling the sea air; hearing bird song; enjoying the blossoming of flowers in the Springtime; listening to other people's stories; imaginary games with my grandson; art galleries (what were they trying to express?); philosophical conversations (does anyone really understand Sartre and the existentialists?; reaching that yoga stretch; the rare really good movie; deep dark French Roast coffee (no sugar, no cream please); Farmer's Markets; snacking on snow peas on the vine; hummingbirds; browsing in bookstores/libraries; hot tub/sauna, etc. etc.

Thanks for this - it's too easy to forget what brings us joy. We tend to concentrate on our troubles so often.

I think that most of us don't use the word 'joy' that often. We might say happy or content, but not 'joy'. Joy is a much deeper word. I think you probably responded like I would have. I actually think I did one time. Of course, her response was, "What do you think joy means?" You know how they do. When we ask a question, they turn it right around and ask us!
Thanks for this!

All my kids being here on a holiday
Camping
Writing

Good coffee when I wake up
A bag of Smarties that I don't have to share with anyone
Raspberry jelly rings that I don't have to share with anyone
Potato Chips and Ice Cream mixed together
The Yankees beating the Red Sox
The Yankees winning the World Series
Listening to loons at night when I'm camping

Happened to me about an hour ago--I was walking my dog down by the river and a Great Blue Heron took off in flight right in front of me! They are such shy birds that I usually only see them from a distance, but I could have reached out and touched the end of this one's wing. It was soooo beautiful as it lifted itself into the air and soared to the other side of the river. I felt pure joy and it's still with me as I think about it right now and share it with all of you (The thought and the sharing gets those brain chemicals flowing once all over again!)
Thanks for this!

A really good joke

A fire in the wintertime

The sound of a brook

Being in the hammock in my back yard with my dogs

Flowers

Organizing stuff (I didn't say I wasn't weird lol)

Really encouraging someone

Strong coffee with a friend

A dog sandwich (that's me in the guest room snuggling with one doggie at my tummy and the other behind my knees--and I'm the sandwich!)

When I first started therapy I struggled to get more than about 2.5 things on my list too. Helpfully, there's a DBT list of possible 'pleasant events' with 176 suggestions... you can find it here

My little disabled dog's smile
My little princess dog's snoring
A walk in the woods
Finding a deer at the creek
The baby ducks on the pond
The songbirds in the convent garden
The chipmunk that steals their birdfood
The nun that weeds the flowers
The nun that is SO patient when I'm mute
When my words come back after being gone
The friar that sways when he sings at mass
The fat cat staring down the chickens
The skinny cat pouncing on the fat cat
When I practice violin without screeching
The smell of clean laundry
A new scent of new shower gel
Melted marshmallows in hot chocolate
Turkish delight
Memories of my grandpa's singing
Memories of my grandma's kitchen smells
A long car ride with the perfect music
My T innocently calling me "my dear"
Having my own key to a safe place to stay
Thanks for this!
