I've read some interesting things about this type of therapy. Somethings sound right about how it could help a person but don't understand how it would work? Does anyone have experience with inner family therapy or parts therapy who does not have DID? Do you find it helpful?

Yes, I have done a type of therapy with my T called ego state therapy, in which we worked with different ego states of mine, such as versions of me at younger ages and also a "non-me" ego state too. My T is a family systems therapist, so he uses techniques he might use with a person's family with their own internal family, or ego states. I found it very helpful. We don't do too much of it anymore, but occasionally we will slip a bit in. I do not have DID. My T works with my ego states through me. I am a kind of liaison.
Readytostop, even if this type of therapy ends up not being that helpful to you, I think for anyone interested in therapy, it is pretty cool to have a go at it. If it doesn't help you, you can try something else.

I do not have DID and my T does IFS, internal family systems therapy. I liked it from Day 1 and find it very helpful. I close my eyes and my T asks me about the part we are working with. We really get to know that part--how old she is, how she feels, does she know I'm there, what does she need from me, etc. I learn to accept and have compassion for each part we work with. IFS is a gentle kind of therapy, but is very powerful. When we're talking about a part I feel free to say anything because it's not ME talking, it's the PART. I highly recommend seeing an IFS therapist.

Unintergrated aspects of myself do make themselves apparent to us in session, but setting out to work specifically with a "part" no, this can lead to contrived notions of exactly what ego states are exactly and how they get communicated with.
