Good day,

I had therapist (LCPC) for over 10 years, treated for depression. She kept me alive at least twice. The hospital sold their BH unit to some big company, my T did not transition over (she hinted that it was her choice because the new conditions were not tolerable).

She gave me her home phone number in case of absolute crisis but I was wondering can I send her a card or note just to let her know I am still in treatment? Short note, minimal medical info. Would she be allowed to reply or is communication only allowed in a professional setting?

I think it depends on the T on whether they will reply. It is certainly not unethical for you to send a note or card.

After I was done with therapy with my first T, I called her to ask if she could suggest referrals for a therapist who works with teens, for my daughter. I left a voice mail and she never called back.

My current T has mentioned a couple of times that he heard from past clients, sometimes by phone. So I assume he spoke with them. He also showed me an interesting book a former client sent. He certainly accepted that post therapy gift and seemed pleased. Don't know if he sent a thank you, but I would guess he did, as he is a gracious man.

I think a card or note is really lovely and will be appreciated even if she doesn't return any communication.

I sent my ex t an email a few months ago- well about six months now and she wrote a small email back. I think it depends on the t if they reply.

It depends on the therapist whether or not they reply. According to their code of ethics or whatever its called, they are legally unable to initiate any contact with a client for non-treatment related purposes for two years after the termination. That however, does not mean the client can not contact the therapist...
