I ended therapy with T1 last month... it was psychodynamic therapy with a male PsyD... and I was feeling stuck for months and I couldn't get it to move forward and so I ended it...

I have an appt with a new T. tomorrow night. This t is a female MA who is supervised by a PsyD who does CBT and emotion focused therapy. I feel like I went as opposite as I could get it...

When I saw T1 I was in crisis so i didn't interview. Does anyone have any good questions to ask? Also does anyone have experience with emotion focused therapy?

Something important to me is contact outside of sessions. Therefore, I always ask this up front: "What is your policy for contact between sessions? Do you have an email address that you share with clients and what's your policy for responding? Do you return phone calls during the workday? In the evenings/on the weekends?" One of the things with this type of therapy is that I find that I have things come out and hit me several hours later or the next day and at times, these things are pretty big and I need the check in. What were the issues that you didn't like with your last T? Perhaps you could base some questions off this. With a student T, maybe you should ask how long she expects to be in X town?

Good luck!

My t does emotionally focused therapy at least with couples. I don't really talk to him about what theories or techniques he's using with me, but I think I like emotion focused therapy to the extent I understand it. I think it's deeper than cbt would be. idk. Have you already interviewed t2? Hope it went well if so. I interviewed a few t's about a year ago and I'm trying to remember what I talked to them about. I told them that I was meeting with a few t's, so it wasn't so awkward at the end when we were deciding whether to reschedule. I think I told them I'd think about it and call. I suppose I asked them what theories or types of therapy they practiced. I checked about whether they were very closely connected with people I work with- usually I did that on the phone ahead of time. I told them why I had picked them. I didn't have a lot of questions, but they all seemed able to keep the conversation going and gave me an idea of their personality.
