So I have been told I sound like a little child especially over the phone.

I mentioned it to my T who made me do some vocal stuff and suddenly I could hear what I thought was my normal voice. My throught ( spelling!) was a bit sore but it freaked me out that I could change my voice like that.

My friends and family thought I sounded normal so maybe my voice is just changing when under stress and/or seeing T but itīs a hard world when someone thinks you are alot younger than you are.

I want to take action and be a responsible adult but somehow always gets treated like I am alot younger and somehow clueless( I am not)

Anyone else experience this and what happens ????????????I am 35 and get asked if I want a child ticket in the bus and so on. It makes me sad to say the least!
Thanks for this!

There ought to be a witty comeback for that.

e.g. "Yes, and my dolly wants one too."

Same here and similar things have happened to me. I'm in my thirties and look incredibly young for my age. Re voice, I also sound young as quite a few times when I've answered the phone the person will ask whether mum or dad is in I sometimes go quite childlike in t anyway but I look upon my physcial factors as an advantage during those times.

So do you think itīs related to a diagnosis? Dissociation, borderline or something else?

Perhaps it comes a from place of fearing to upset, or failure to please??

I look and sound very young also. I know that my voice gets even younger sounding when I am fearful or afraid I'm in trouble or something. However as a teacher I also have my "teacher voice" which is very...hm...grown up

I still remember when I was 26 and bought beer at the grocery store in Virginia and got to the checkout with my cash and they asked for ID and I got all confused; it was back in the days before credit cards at grocery stores and I wasn't writing a check, I couldn't understand what was going on.

I sometimes get told I look a few years younger than I am, nothing too dramatic, but my voice...... ack. I always get told I'm quiet, and I've heard my voice on answerphone messages and I do sound like a child... lately in therapy my behavior also seems to be.. rather childish..

I SO want to be a grown up - a sophisticated, level headed young woman! With one of those lovely sultry smoky voices you hear, you know?

I think a lot of it was how I was raised, encouraged to be meek and quiet.. I still don't really feel empowered to make a lot of noise. But, I'm so used to speaking at low volume that it feels normal to me and to try and raise it feels as if I'm straining to do so, which feels uncomfortable - I feel as if I'm shouting, and I worry I sound aggressive.

In therapy I probably go even quieter than usual. My T has often had to ask me to repeat what I said because she didn't catch it.

So yes, I empathise! I don't really know what to do about it. I've started to try using EFT, tapping.. I figured maybe I can empower myself to find and use my voice with confidence.. see how that goes...

Yes, whenever I hear my voice (sometimes have to use audio and video recording for training on my course) I'm really thrown by how young I sound. And I've noticed in therapy over the last few months, the little one that I become has her own words for things- over-regularizing the past tense of verbs ('I goed') and immature speech sounds ('then' becomes 'den') and all sorts of things. T never comments, and I try just to go with it rather than become judgemental and try to stamp it out.

I have a young voice too. I hate hearing it on video and audio and always try to pass it off as speaker distortion. When I'm nervous it gets higher and younger.

it could be, I know some people who when they are in their mania phase they talk in a higher toned voice then normal due to excitement, stress,... I know some one who talked like a child when ever t hey were experiencing a psychotic episode and hallucinating, their problem was feeling afraid caused their vocal cords to tighten up, so it caused them to have a higher pitched voice.

I also know someone who talked like a child because their vocal cords and voice box wasnt getting used (refused to talk for a long time) due to inactivity her vocal cords stopped working correctly. her doctor referred her for physical therapy because of her yrs as a selective mute she had to learn how to talk all over again, she took voice lessens, singing lessons, now she talks just fine..

I used to be confused for a child. my problem was I had these growths on my vocal cords. after surgery and healing my voice was a bit deeper. now I sound like an adult woman..

I have also sounded like a child when I would become an alternate personality. (DID)

there are lots of reasons why a person's voice sounds like a child, sometimes its genetic, sometimes its a mental problem, sometimes its an emotional (having to do with fear, excitement, stress...) problem and sometimes its because of physical health problems..

your treatment provider can help you discover why you sound like a child and how to fix what ever is causing it. mine were a great help to me.

I think itīs DID I am afraid of having ( no offence, and I donīt know that much about it) ...sometimes my T used to talk to me like I was a little child. It really freaked me out! Like ...hey I might say childish things and have a childish voice...BUT I think of myself as an adult. Seriouly just weird and made me sad sometimes. ( Although I must admit she would have made a good child therapist)
Thanks for this!
