Hi there--I have guilt issues and have tried several Ts in the past. I never really interviewed any of them and none of them really helped. They basically listened and said I shouldn't feel the way I do. But I can't help it. I gave up for therapy for a while, tried to analyze myself and even felt better for about 6 months but I got triggered and have gone back to square one. I have not been able to pull myself out of my funk this time so I need to try therapy again. What kind of questions should I ask to help find the right T for me? I need one who will not only look into my past but also teach me coping skills if I can't ever move on. Thank you!

Hi Terry,
I didn't interview my t because I was referred when I was in crisis, but I think you'd want to ask the t's what kind of approaches they use. My t uses various techniques that have taught me the coping skills and are now allowing me to address issues from my past. Could you tell the potential ts that is what you are looking for- looking into your past and gaining coping skills - and ask if they think their approach will provide that?

THIS helped me a lot when I was looking.
I think the biggest thing is being assertive enough to ask questions and let prospective T know what you are looking for. Be sure to ask about extra contact if you think you will need that. (ie: email, phone calls, texting...etc). I didn't do the interview well at all, I couldn't speak up or ask questions. I did get a decent T in spite of it though. I was referred by my pdoc who knew me really well.
