My pdoc was asking me if I was able to find a psychologist that was able to do EMDR for the treatment of my PTSD. I know a year ago just after the trauma happened, I was searching the internet to see what kind of help might work for my dealing with the trauma I had just gone through along with my Mothers death. In doing my searching for PTSD treatment, EMDR came up as one method of treatment. I read some about it, but over the internet, could only find anyone that used it about 2 hours from my home. I read a little about it & how it works, but didn't understand much about what I read. I don't know anyone who has been treated with that method, & was wondering if anyone here has been treated with EMDR?, how it works?, what the treatment experience is like?, how well it seems to work?, & any more information about it?
I am very curious because just plain talk therapy doesn't seem to be helping the PTSD that much. I am able to talk about it pretty well, but it seems like I need something more because it is something I just can't seem to get over. I feel frustrated because it feels like I need a switch to turn off that part of my brain that is constantly being triggered by stupid little things like misplacing things or having thing end up missing when I just had them (the RN was always taking things & then when I started looking for them & she started looking too, plop, there it would show up right by her. It is frustrating to have those simple things have such an effect on my life. Like there were several things that ended up missing at the ranch right under my nose just after I had used them. I knew that it was my trainers husband that did it because he told me where to look for the item (in the garbage can for example). I lost it looking for the thing & all he did was laugh when I looked in the garbage can & found it. I ended up moving my horses just to get away from that & situations like that are having quite an effect on my life. I am just curious about others actual experiences with the EMDR method of treatment, Debbie

Hello eskielover, Yes, I've had EMDR for past-trauma and found it to be very helpful. The process is a fairly quick way to get through it, it may feel uncomfortable at the time, but with a good therapist, he will get you through it as painlessly as possible. The process kind-of fills in the gaps, so that you get a full story instead of bits and pieces, popping up and frightening you all the time. It also pushes the 'memory' into the correct part of the brain, so that it does'nt keep getting replayed. Hope this makes sense to you. Hugs.

EMDR assists you in allowing your natural instinctual capacity to heal to start working and unfreeze.
EMDR was a life saver for me and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Waking the Tiger by Peter A. Levine answers all of one's questions about EMDR in simple terms if you are interested in more thorough information Good Luck |

Thank you Pegasus & vanna,
For giving me some insight as to how well it works. It does sound like it would be benificial & I will look into the book "Waking the Tiger". I would like to know a little more about it. I have found that talk therapy seems to make things worse & when I was in the group sessions 3 days a week, alot of things came out but were scattered all over my mind which seemed to mess me up even worse than I am. Now that I am away from that outpatient treatment, things are settling into my background, & coming out when I am back in my Mothers home, or when triggers end up hitting continually. I think I will ask my Pdoc if he can locate someone that specializes in EMDR......I would think he should have better contacts for finding someone than I do....especially when I can only locate them over 2 hours away from home. The psychologist I went to for a few months while my other psychologist was having back surgery, only dabbled in it......& she didn't even suggest the use of it. I don't think I would want someone who wasn't very experienced with it to do it. It has been hard even getting my pdoc & psychologist to recognize that the trauma I went through really caused PTSD. They were with me when I was going through the trauma & couldn't even help me deal with it while going through it. They thought it was so much easier to identify the problem as anorexia rather than the fact that the trauma was the cause of the weight loss. I know that Post is after the fact, so as I ended up with the symptoms, they ended up realizing how it effected me & treatment that works has been a nightmare & very unsuccessful. I appreciate the information..... Debbie
