has anyone had to get a cab to therapy and if so, can you go in early if it's raining hard?

I normally get a lift to my sessions but tomorrow I'll have to get a cab and the forecast is torrential rain I see my T privately so there's no waiting area. It wouldn't have been a problem when seeing my agency T but I really don't know if my current T will be happy with me turning up early. I want to book the cab with enough time so I don't end up missing some of the session but of course this means I might get there early.

I was wondering whether to ring T tomorrow if it's raining heavily and ask her what i could do?

I don't have an umbrella and health difficulties mean it is difficult for me to stand in the street for very long.

This probably sounds crazy but I'm worried about it.

Hi Dreamy, I dont think its crazy. I must admit tho, I dont know how these private practice folks work. If you arrive on time, you just knock and wait for someone to answer or what?

Can you call or email T to ask about this unique situation? No need to worry if a quick call or email can take care of it.
Thanks for this!

Normally I get driven to therapy and get there a couple of mins early. At my appt time I go to the door and T answers. I see her at her home so it would feel sort of uncomfortable to turn up earlier than my allocated time.

I guess I'll have to see what the weather's doing in the morning and ring her if necessary. I've had to get a cab before but i've been lucky until now with dry weather.

Thanks for your support. I know this sounds a weird dilemma but I'm very anxious about it. I don't want to overstep boundaries.

No worries, Dreamy. Yeah, the weather might not be crappy tomorrow. One thing I am doing better at is not worrying about everything. Most of what we worry about never happens. Try to save it for when you really need it.

I'm not a therapist, but I've worked out of my home and had to accommodate clients. Weather is always a possible factor and I've often used my kitchen as an impromptu waiting room. I'm sure your T has had to make some sort of provisions in the past. Check ahead, but try not to worry.

Just call Dreamy. You will feel much better when you know what to do, why worry all night long?

I would call your t let her know you are taking a cab. I am sure she will let you come sit inside!

I would maybe make sure you show up a couple minutes late? :-) Or, I'd borrow an umbrella and check out the neighborhood within walking distance, see if there's a pub or something where I could get a lunch and then walk or get a second ride to her door? Train station? Have you figured out how you're getting out of there/home?

Another option might be to just pay the cab driver to sit there till its time. I know its extra money but I think its at a cheaper rate then when they are driving... I know the cab will wait for me when I run errands, etc...

before getting a car, i had the same dilemma. i told my therapist that on occasion it would probably be hard to time the train or the cab, and that if it was raining i wouldn't want to wait outside. she told me it was no problem at all - even when i said, "even if i'm thirty minutes early?!" and she still said that it was totally fine. the difference is that she does have a little waiting area, so it's not like i would have been standing right outside the office door or something.

anyway, i don't think it hurts to ask. just give your therapist a heads up, and i'm sure she'll be fine with it. it's not like you're trying to do this all the time either.

Thanks everyone.

I didn't ring T because it was late last night when I posted (I'm in UK) plus I thought I'd see how the weather is this morning. It is going to be raining hard by the looks of things. I have mobility difficulties so walking around the block or going somewhere simply isn't a possiblity. I'll be getting a cab home as well.

I think the best thing to do is ring T later this morning and let her know. i've had to get a cab before but as I said I've been lucky with the weather until now and just sat on some grass a couple of houses down with a book. I won't be doing that today!

I'll give her a ring about an hour before my appt and let her know my dilemma. I'm hoping she might let me sit in the therapy room if I'm a few minutes early. I don't really want to turn up late as it's been a very tough weekend and I need the time.

It worked out fine in the end in case anyone's interested. I rang T before I left and she told me to just knock when I get there and we'll start the session from my arrival time. I reminded her I'd had to book another cab at the usual ending time but she said that was okay. As it happened the cab was slightly late collecting me and then the roads were bad due to all the rain and flooding so by the time I arrived there it was only about one minute early. T agreed it would've been unreasonable for me to wait outside. The return cab was a few minutes late collecting me from T's house but she said we could sit and wait in the lounge. By the time our session ended and I'd gone downstairs to sit in the lounge the cab turned up. So all's well that end's well. Not something I'd like to do everytime but it was nice that T was willing to accomodate me.
