even if u switched therapists in the middle how long have u been in therapy?

I have been in therapy for two years with two different therapists...My progress has been very slow because of my anxiety///I hope i do not have to be in therapy forever, but i do not feel my anxiety is in control enough without a therapist?

Six years and a month. I feel like I just started. We're just starting to hit the big issues. I'm really slow.

I was with my ex-therapist from spring of my 8th grade year to halfway through my sophomore year of high school. I switched after a one-month break and have been with my current therapist ever since.

With ex-T from October last year until late May this year. With current T since then - but I've only had a few sessions with him because he's been away. I'll return to therapy in a month's time. I cannot feel, now, that I got anything out of the sessions with ex-T, mostly because I was unable to talk to her about my actual issues, and focused on surface stuff.

7 months with same T..I had just gotten started with the T before this for the first time almost a year ago... maybe three sessions and he had to drop all of his patients b/c of medical issues, and that is how I got my current T and I don't really count those appointments.

Been with same T for 14 years (Yikes) but it feels like I just started. I had a lot of issues to work through.

Technically I have been in therapy for 10 months. But I go twice a week, and have been going twice a week since my fourth month of therapy. I am not real good at math but, I think that would make it about 18 months.

I questioned my T once as to the lenth of time I had already been in therapy, becuase she had mentioned at one point that she usually sees clients on the average of about 6 months, and then they move on.

I got a bit worried that I had already been seesing her for 9 months at that point, and was no where near ready to make it on my own without therapy..... and she said, everyone heals at their own rate, no two people are at the same point in the healing process, and that some people need more help to learn how to work though past hurts and trauma's, and that some dx need more support, then others.

She also said, you are an individual, and this is your own personal journey......I will be here for you, as long as you need me to be here for you.....

3 and a half years total, all with the same T. I've needed every session! It was so hard for me when I began, to actually talk about myself for the first time. I still struggle with it, but initially it took a long time before I was able to say much at all. She's my first T and I'm very fond of her. I liked her immediately. She hasn't given up on me yet! I've taken lots of steps, which are huge for me, to improve my life since I began seeing her. I never planned for it to last this long, but the length of time I've seen her is really important to me. It's the most stable, supportive, caring, helpful relationship I've ever had with anyone. So I hope she plans to stick it out for a while longer. I feel like my life will always have a bit of a hole there, once she's no longer in it.

No such thing as really slow in therapy - we all open up in our own time!

I've been in therapy with current T for almost two years. I've been in therapy for a total of, well, counting my first therapist when I was in high school? I'm in the ballkpark of 9 years or so, with 6 different Ts and multi-year breaks in between.

Wow, feeling like a complete failure here. I was in t when my daughter was born 16 & 1/2 years ago, and had already been in for a couple years. Sometimes I feel that I'm making headway, and then others I'm back to where I started. What is it that i am not getting? Maybe there are hopeless causes? In the process of giving up once again, I'm tired.

Started over 6 years ago in March 2006. I went for about a year and a half, moved & continued with someone else for another few months. Then I took a break for about a year. I went again for a few sessions here or there with different people at the university and don't remember any of their names and wouldn't recognize them if they walked by. Did that off and on for maybe 6 months. Then stopped again in February 2010. Started up with my dietitian again in October 2010 and soon got involved in individual therapy again which I did till last month until I moved. I'll be starting up again once I move again soon as I'm a mess without it. Oh, the first therapy run was more focused on the eating disorder and some of the depression, while lately it's been more focused on depression, anxiety, and relationships.

I'm in the 3-4 year mark and let me say, I'm super uber impressed that people have been in therapy longer. Makes me feel a bit relieved and less psycho.

Don't.

My old therapist told me that some people might need therapy on and off for life.

That, to me, is unimaginable, but maybe he's right? I have no idea, but if it's keeping you functioning as a human being, I wouldn't worry about it. Everyone needs something.
Thanks for this!

First T for 4 yrs. and my current T since 1996. I also deal with a biochemical imbalance and will probably need to see a T for the rest of my life. I consider it to be part of my treatment program.

Off and on (mostly on) for 35 years. That is why I have such good mental health.
