I have participated in a variety of group therapies well in inpatient, residential and outpatient. They are actually quite helpful, even though it takes me a very long time to open up. But once im comfortable its helpful

Hi Everyone,
On looking for groups: You can try going on psychology today, also a great place to find individual ts, and look up your city/ zip, and then click on group counseling and all these group listings should come up with a description and price and everything!
Also, the type of day program I go to is called "psychosocial rehabilitation" or PSR, so you could google that for your area. Believe it or not, medicade does pay for this shocking I know!
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'm waiting to hear if the group I was referred to will take me in. They are full but leader is going to ask them if 1 more can join. DBT group and mixed too. Apprehensive about that because I want to be in a women's group. My therapist highly recommends this leader and tells me she thinks I will be ok. I do trust her but.......

I've been in several groups (process groups for particular populations and DBT), and I hate the idea of groups. I prefer one-on-one interactions with people, and the more people there are, the quieter I tend to get. Having said that, most of the groups I've done have been extremely helpful in helping me learn and grow, and I would not be in the place I am today (much better than several years ago) without them, especially the DBT group. I am currently trying a group, because I cried and ran out of my second session with an individual T here in the new city and just feel overwhelmed by the idea of individual right now. I think everyone should give group a shot, because you really won't know until you try.

I took part in group therapy when I was a teen. It did not help, at all. All it did was alienate and frustrate me. I started comparing myself to the others, because my issues were a lot different from theirs. My problems were directly related to my poor social skills, rather than a mental illness and/or psychological trauma so I felt I did not belong there. No matter how hard I tried, I could not relate. I felt worse after every session so I ended up quitting.

Now, I realize the group was a poor fit and the wrong recommendation for me, since I was misdiagnosed. This experience has deterred me from considering and pursuing formal group psychotherapy as a treatment option. My one on one appointments with my psychiatrist work a lot better for me, especially since I am an introvert. The privacy also discourages my occasional self comparison tendencies.

I had it yes ago. It was unproductive to say the least. For my unconscious to have a spring board I need that 1:1 therapy where I feel completely safe to release that stuff. Group therapy I guess, but I needed more then that.
