.
Would you be willing to live with "barely enough $$" to see a T that charges alot, but might be really good and has specialties you need? Would you be willing to put off paying debt or saving money to see a T? Or would you look for a cheaper alternative, that probably has less training/specialties.... ? ![]() Would your answer change if...........your life might depend on it? |

I'd pay double what I'm paying now if the therapist was really good, was available outside of therapy (I.e. email), actually remembered my homework, etc. mine openly admitted that she got me confused with other clients-and she has like 5 clients.

I don't think the most expensive Ts are necessarily the best ones.
I would try to find a happy medium, ie a T with a sliding scale or a cheaper fee. |

Hi Tollhouse, some Ts are good without being expensive, it all depends. The most important is whether your T works well with you, I think. I hope you're able to find one who suits you!
My good T helps me to live a full happy healthy life, which saves money in the long run, and is most efficient and productive. Without my T I'd not be where I am today --- soo many improvements in my life, made possible because of her support. |

I am willing to make some sacrifices for therapy but not to the detriment of both me and my husbands quality of life, not to the point that we can barely afford food or gas or can't pay our bills. As it is we have had to scale back our spending just so i can go to therapy, but i couldn't justify anymore.

If it helps, research has shown that your relationship with your T matters more than the type of therapy. I guess it depends on the speciality though as some stuff, e.g. EDs, you do need specific help.

Personally, I think that there are enough good therapists out there that I'd be able to find one that fits into my budget. Of course, I get it that there are some, not so good, therapists out there, but I'm willing to find one that fits me personally AND financially.
I had a wonderful therapist in the east. When I left, she offered to continue to do therapy via skype. I'm not good at the phone or internet talking for anything other than friendship issues. Doing intense therapy via skype just doesn't do it for me . . . additionally, and this is a BIG addition, my insurance doesn't pay for anything other than face-to-face appointments. As much as I "clicked" with this therapist, it wasn't worth it to me to pursue a continuation of the therapeutic relationship without the support of insurance. |

It's hard to stop seeing a t i'm attached to, so I would do more to keep a good/longtime t.
However, starting fresh, I'd look for the right balance of insurance coverage and "good fit" |

T prices seem to vary quite a bit. i think it is possible to find someone who offers the same specialities that you are looking for but also charges less or has a sliding scale. i don't see it as an either/or.
i guess maybe if i had an established relationship with a T that i thought was fantastic i'd sacrifice a little but most of the Ts i've seen have had sliding scales. at this point i think i'd be a little put off by a T who didn't offer their poorest clients a sliding scale since therapy is so expensive. i know that some Ts do pro bono (free) for people who can't afford it at all. that probably isn't too common i'd guess.

To me, it really comes down to what it feels like to be with them and how skilled they are at the basics. The T's speciality is of less interest.
