I know that lately this theme keeps coming up around here, I am curious myself as I have only done a few art sessions but I imagine all therapists work differently.
Here is a sample if Natalie Rogers and a client doing some expressive art therapy

Thanks for this!

Awh, sorry for upsetting you Onward.
Was it tears of joy or sadness?

She seems overtly confident, probably a fake like the infamous Gloria that was exploited too. I think they just wanted to give an example but they could have picked a more realistic client

Yeah i did wonder if it was fake, it seemed to lack a depth that normally comes with therapy, i wouldn't be happy if my sessions were like this.

But there is so little out there showing art therapy sessions.

maybe she was a therapy intern doing her own therapy? she did seem very insightful about her issues.

all the T did was repeat back what she said. i would need more than that from a T. actually, if that is all a T did i think it would drive me a little batty.

This t is Carl rogers daughter! He is founder of the person centred therapy and they usually spend the whole session paraphrasing what the client says. Personally it is not enough for me either and I would end up quitting but it can be a kind and gentle way of therapy if a client if grieving or suffering trauma, the t tends not to offer solutions or to guide the client in any way, just sit with them
Thanks for this!

That was wild.
You will not believe what memory came back.
I'm an artist and I had a memory from 3rd grade come back.
The class was told to take a piece of newspaper and put it behind our backs and tear it into a shape .
Everyone quickly finished except me.
I kept tearing this shape into a football player that was running.
Picture the Heisman trophy.
It looked just like that.
Then we were told to glue it to a piece of paper and draw around it.
When I finished...I had a football field with fans and a stadium around this football player and he was scoring a touchdown.
It was really something to look at.
The only thing was the yard lines. They went from 0 to 100 instead of 0to 50 and back yo 0.
The student thought it was great but the teacher criticized it because of the yard lines.
I could only see the player going one way.
The kids laughed and she handed it back to be fixed and I did and I hated it.
I copied everyone elses artwork for the rest of the year.
That teacher hurt me and got the class to make fun of it.
Can you believe that?

I can believe it cos my teacher when i was 6 held up my drawing to the class and ridiculed it.

Hope she sh*ts hedgehogs for the rest of her life.

I can believe it----I remember a couple of cruel "art" teachers in school----what you did was incredible, and a clear demonstration of unusual talent...I don't understand what makes, especially a teacher, want to take away someone's success (I also believe because I had an artist mother who chose my brother (poor guy....in the end a real burden) as her artist and golden child, and dismissed every effort I made, became visibly livid when I was praised...and there is so much I have never done because of that...

This can be the most frustrating part of life.
Why not assess strengths and feed and nurture that.
I imagine people do this all the time.
