I actually found mine by looking in the phone book for someone close to me.

Then I did some research, looked her up on RateMDs.com (not always completely reliable), College of Psychologists, her website, etc. etc. and took my chances. It has worked out well.

In the past it hasn't always worked out so well, I've had some not so good Ts.

Current one is the ED specialist at my undergraduate university, so I got referred to her after working with an intern for a few months. A previous one worked in private practice with my dietitian, and I was really needy at the time. She suggested I see one of the two Ts she worked with there, and I met this one through a combo meal/process group. I'm so glad I found her, because I had such a tough time finding a good fit when I lived out in that state for a few years.

Kinda weird, my t and I were both actually rather famous, and we knew each other, but didnt realize we knew each other...kind of hard to explain. A few years later, we met in person, and i said, " oh are you THAT _____?" And she said yep...are you THAT _______?" And i told her i was. And at that point were realized we had known each other peripherally for a few years, we just hadnt met in person yet.

First I looked in my insurance network for someone in the area. Then I checked for those psychologists on Angie's List and the one I chose had a good review.

I read about her in a publication made available in local doctor's offices. It was created by the local hospital, which she is affiliated with. She is working out well.

I didn't find my therapist. I was sent to her, involuntarily, by the residential treatment facility I had been staying at.

I found my T by showing up to the appointment with the pdoc. He was not who I was expecting to have there, and I nearly flipped out. He was in the appointment so I felt outnumbered, but as he was already THERE I figured I may as well go back the second time.

Since I was a grad student, I wanted to go to the Univ counseling center. I had a faculty friend who had seen someone there (faculty could get a few consulting sessions), and he recommended my T (the center had a staff of @ 25, plus 2 pdocs). When I checked, he had the credentials I wanted and was the Chief Psychologist and Training Supervisor for the interns, so I made an appointment. He also had a private practice, so when I wasn't eligible as a student anymore, I could continue with him. That continuity ended up being really important to me. I liked him immediately.

I found my t sorta by perfect luck. My pdoc gave me a list of 5 or so names and I was researching them, was reading one of their profiles on psychologytoday.com and on the same page was my t - her profile just jumped out at me because it mentioned dream work. So I got brave and called both her and one off pdoc's list. She called me back and the other one didn't, and we hit it off on that first phone call, so i stuck pdoc's list in a folder and never looked back. the rest is successful history.
