I'm not in therapy right now but when I was I used to have laughing fits in the middle of my sessions. My therapist would laugh along a little and she was very nice about it but I found it extremely embarrassing. It's not like anything funny would happen, I just couldn't help myself. Anyone else experience this? OR have any theories on why I do that?
One of my therapists thought it meant that I was trying to escape thinking about something that made me feel very uncomfortable. Another thought I did it whenever I discovered a new idea that I liked. |

Nervous laughter as people call it.

One time I laughed so hard I flipped my chair over. I'm sorry, I know I keep mentioning it. That's the last time for this calendar year I promise. My t almost did a spit-take this week. It happens.

I laugh at some very weird moments. When I saw another T for two weeks while mine was off, she said she could tell I had a history of trauma and I laughed. I said: "I don't know why I'm laughing, it's not funny," then laughed again.

I've had a similar experience in which I expressed a quite negative thought and laughed behind it. T asked why I was laughing and I couldn't really explain besides the fact that it was such a condescending statement. She suggested it was a opinion that I had reflected on myself even though I was referring to someone else. *shrug* I think it could be the "tapping into certain emotions" thing for you.

I tend to laugh when I'm nervous or when I'm trying to soften the impact that a particularly negative thought might have.
