I was horrified and amused to read that you have to PROVE that you belong to an identifiable race. Doesn't everyone?

"I rule against your plea on racial profiling of the jury. Eskimo is not a proper race."

In my jury selection...they excused all the people with medical backgrounds and one person who had a religious bumper sticker but they never said why but it was the only stand out things about their responses

You don't have to prove it. The jury questionnaires have a place to self-identify race. I once had to explain why I wanted to strike a young man who refused to take off his hat or sunglasses during voir dire, kept using his middle finger to push back his hair or rub his face, and pointedly pretended to sleep while not answering questions, because he self identified as black. I was like -- seriously? Are you kidding? First of all, *I* look more black than this guy, and second of all, SERIOUSLY?? The judge, opposing counsel and court reporter all cracked up and then the judge made me articulate my race neutral reason for striking the guy.
Thanks for this!

I once got a reversal because a judge refused to acknowledge what race any juror was unless the defense counsel polled each venire panel member to see what their answer was.
Our questionnaires printouts are notoriously wrong all the time for almost every juror.

Only time I was called for jury duty, I was selected. I didn't want to do it because it was my one week off between my previous job and my current one. I hadn't realized I could choose when to reschedule it -- I thought they would just randomly assign me again. Oh, well, I know for next time.

I didn't think I'd get picked, because it was a 6 person jury, and I was like 20th in line for selection. I even had the opportunity to tell a very believable white lie to get out of it (The judge asked me, "Do you value the word of a police officer more than a civilian's, solely because he is a police officer?"... I could have said yes, but that would have been a lie, so I sighed and said no). Somehow, I ended up being on that jury, and I could SEE the defense attorney asking his client about me. I wasn't sure why at the time, but as the evidence came to light, it became clear that it probably had to do with the fact that I lived close to where the incident occurred, and therefore knew that the defense's representation of that area when presenting their case was ludicrous.

It was interesting, even though I would rather have been home drinking wine in my pj's. If it taught me anything, it was the importance of having a good lawyer. You're not supposed to take the skill of the lawyers into account, just the evidence -- but oh boy was it hard not to digress into talking about how awful the defense attorney was. At one point, he even had his fly unzipped, which was just icing on the cake of his incompetence.

Make sure the HOA knows about his harassing behavior. Install a security camera by your door, in an obvious, clearly visible place [even if it's a fake].

Those are the things I would start with.
Thanks MKAC, those are good suggestions.

Agree, Jersey -- it's hard to know whether you're overreacting or not, but the fact is this guy IS intimidating to you. And it's not a stretch to see why if he's basically not leaving you alone, even if it's from a distance. Sorry you have to deal with that . MKAC's suggestions are good ones if you're feeling harassed.

I love the work "ilk," for some reason.

I've gone through voir dire for a bunch of trials, but never been selected as a juror. The only case for which I'm pretty sure I know the reasons was a civil case where a woman was suing about 12 different companies for her husband's death from cancer. She claimed his lung cancer was the result of asbestos in their home and not his 40 year history of smoking cigarettes. Apparently, the plaintiff didn't want me on the jury because I had asbestos removed from my home, unlike her.

HANKSTER
it is not my intent to be mean but I am sure that most of us can speak for ourselves and don't need to be called out for what might not even be an issue . and can you please give us a break. allow us to be who we are and make our mistakes without humiliation if it even was a mistake was not that big of a thing .and I don't feel you need to apologize for me ill do it myself if I feel an apology is needed. I say this whith a great amount of respect

I have seen people ask other people questions about themselves. As long as it is politely done, I see no harm in it as a general matter - my personal take on such things.

Ditto WTH. You know what feels unwelcoming to me? Your one-sided rivalry, or whatever it is, with MKAC. Granite basically said what I was thinking (before she edited it to be nice!).

Granite once asked me what kind of scientist I was, by the way, so it's not true that no one is ever asked.

I would DOUBLE thank you guys if I could.

I get so confused sometimes about what happens on this forum and what is considered acceptable for other people versus the stuff I get criticized for.

Can a juror be held in contempt of court?

you have had a bad day today and have even said so . I hope I can offer you some support for this. after all this is why we are all here . I hope tomorrow is going to be better for you

Thank you. I should have stuck with my original intent to lie low, but I thought the couch was safe and my comments were pretty innocuous. LOL.

I disagree. It's a fairly neutral question, asked in a polite fashion. He can answer or not, as he pleases.
