How long have you been in therapy?
Several Internet sources say it takes 12-20 sessions, but I have been going for almost a year. I asked my t if I should stop and she said that she thought I would keep befitting by going, and I like therapy and feel like I need it, so I will keep going. Can/should therapy last a long time? These are opinion questions...so don't be expecting one to be right or one to be wrong...
one of my Ts said 12 - 20 sessions are good for specific issues such as how to deal with a family issue (ie... grief, new person in family, etc..) perhaps even phobias... or even anxiety... but that same T says lots of people come in for what seems like one of these issues and its just the beginning of figuring out stuff... or the true issue turns out to be trust issues, or PTSD or etc, etc. etc and you start to look at the causes and bamm you are into therapy for a couple of years... then that same T says some people have a mental illness that will be with them forever even if better controlled by medication that may need to have a therapist for the rest of their life... I took that to mean there is no right answer for everyone. |

3 '/2 years ago I started seeing my T, thinking I would be fixed in 6 sessions. l have no idea how long it takes, but tell myself that while l am not resenting the time commitment and money, it must be worthwhile to keep going. Soup

I have been seeing two different therapists, usually once a week or so- for just over 3 years.

I have seen my T for about 65 sessions over 3+ years, and I have seen a lot of healing in a few different areas of my life. But I still feel as though I am just getting to the good stuff. At least with me, a lot of important things wouldn't come out in therapy until I had been seeing my T for a very long time. It takes me forever to trust people. For that particular issue, I'd say it's more beneficial to stay in therapy for a longer period. I guess it depends on the situation and what goals you are working toward.
I think that for some people, depending on desire and need, staying in therapy for a long term makes sense. It can be more of a preventative health care routine than a one-time deal to fix a problem. I don't think it's good if it fosters a source of dependence or addiction, but I see no problem with using therapy to stay connected to one's inner world. |

I just wanted to say, I agree with your answer.
I would add that it also depends on the depth of change you want to make. For the same issue, you could go for a quick 10 sessions to teach yourself new and healthier behaviors, or you could go for a couple of years to do some deeper personal work with the underlying problem. Besides, each person has their own pace and motivation - that also counts. Quote:

I'm 30 years old. I've been dealing with mental illness my whole life. I developed both healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with it. I have no idea what is a sign my illnesses are acting up or even how to distinguish what is a symptom of when my reality gets scued. On top of that I constantly question the validity of medication. There is no way to detangle all this in 20 sessions.

Everybody is different. Some people go for a few weeks, a few months or a few years, while others may remain in therapy for the rest of their lives. The length of time in therapy is no indicator of the unhealthiness of the individual.

I have only been in therapy for almost a year, I think it depends on the person and their needs, I haven't really dealt with anything yet in my therapy, I have major trust issues. when I begin to trust my T more I suppose I will be more open with her.

I've been in (and out) of therapy for 20 years.
I will continue as needed for the duration of my life. A lot to untangle after living in captive violence & abuse for 33.5 years. ![]() |

I don't think the length of time in therapy is what you should be concerned about. I think as long as there continues to be progress in the areas you choose to work then keep going.

7 yr, twice a week. I'd say it depends on what you want/need to work on in therapy. TBH 12-20 sessions sounds ridiculous to me cause it took me nearly 4yr to trust my T enough to start opening up...

I have known my T since 1996 when she was the T for a CSA support group I was attending. I think everyone is different. I deal with a chronic illness as well as complex PTSD. I am currently working through CSA trauma as well as attachment trauma. My T uses movement, breathing, sensorimotor, somatic, and talk therapy.

u end therapy when u feel u dont need it anymore. there is no time limit.

I saw a prior Therapist for 4 years, and hope to see my next Therapist for a long period of time as well, I think that the longer you see someone the more you get out of them.
