I was wondering when everyone on here typically Google's their Therapists name for the first time (I'm assuming that most people on here have done it at some point in time). I have only seen my current Therapist for about a month or so, I have yet to do a Google search but I know that I am bound to do it at some point in time.
With my first Therapist, I can't remember the exact time that I searched for the first time but I remember early on seeing a singer with the exact same name fortunately the band's name included her name and another person's name so I eventually did a search leaving the other person's name out and did find some things. It took me a while longer to find her Facebook page but I did eventually find it (even though according to her join date she actually joined Facebook before I even start to see her). With my last Therapist I did a search fairly early on and told her about it a few weeks back, she didn't seem that mad when I told her.

I first saw my t in an education setting. I then googled her to find her personal practice details to call her.
I have googled her in the past if she's away on holiday; seeing her name on the accreditation website, e.g. the BACP/UKCP, helps me know she's still there. |

I Googled my current T before I started seeing her and did a lot of research before I made the first appointment. I guess I've Googled her sporadically since then, although there isn't much to find, and the stuff I did find was the result of some very careful digging.

Before a first session
I like to know things like professional degrees, some professional background, have they got a website, have they written any books or articles etc, what therapy background are they coming from |

I think doing a google search before making the first appointment can be very helpful. You can identify if they have a web page, then go there and learn their philosophy and approach to care, if they take your insurance, and it can help you learn if they would be a good fit, etc. That may help you decide if you should make an appointment or not.
I would also do a provider search at my state dept of health website so I could see if they have any complaints against them, have had their license suspended at any time, etc.

Yeah I did that with my last Therapist a few weeks after seeing her, but honestly I really don't care what their Education background is as long as they are a good Therapist.

I Googled mine when I was considering changing therapists. He was a referral and I wanted to know as much as I could about him before the first appointment. I had no qualms with telling him about it since I found he has several work-related webpages.

Honestly I think that if we want to Google search our Therapists then we have the right to do so.

I googled my therapist just a little bit and only looked on his practice page at first. About 3 months in I started googling for personal information, which he knows, it was humiliating.

I believe I googled T before I met her. My x-pcp really wanted me to see somebody and after a while I reluctantly agreed. To was a former college of hers who also had no affiliation with the hospital I work for in psych. Pcp actually set up my first appointment so she knew it would be made. I had never even talked to her before that initial appointment so I did a little research..

I googled my T when they set my appointment with her. Always before the first session. Always only for professional information / practice / specialties ...

Googled before I ever saw them for the first session just to get an idea of the person.

I google both Ts and Pdocs before I see them. It helps me to know where they went to school I then have an idea what they were taught to believe. I don't have a lot of choices but when I do I like to choose those who have a more eastern philosophy.

I have never felt the need. When I was searching for a therapist, I used the insurance company's search engine which provided really detailed educational and professional and a great deal of info about his practice. I've never felt the need to search into his personal background as he's always been pretty open that way.

I Googled after I received the referral from insurance so I could see his websit and was able to see a picture of him. I then did the full internet digging about 3 months in. I haven't told him. Sometimes I wonder if he ever Googles me. Probably not but I wonder if he gets curious about what my H looks like or my job.

I prefer not knowing too much about my therapist's personal life. It's none of my business, and quite frankly I don't want to know unless he chooses to tell me things - and usually I'm glad that he doesn't.
However, I did google both my exT and my current T before meeting with them for the first time. It's the only way to find out about their professional background, except for asking them, which can't be done before the first meeting! With exT, I read an interview with her on a blog about psychotherapy, and with current T, I read a few articles he has published. |

Well, I had to google her to get her full name and telephone number before I called to make enquiries, and I think I got it on her LinkedIn page which outlined her modalities and ethos around therapy. It didn't even cross my mine that googling could be considered a breach of the T's privacy until I read it here on PC that some Ts do feel this way. Was struck by slight guilt for a while but then thought hang on a sec, the internet is public! I google and research methodically all doctors/ clinics for my physical health, so of course I'm going to check out my mental health practitioner. When she emails me back her Facebook photo pops up beside the email, so she must not be hugely bothered by the idea of having an online presence, or she'd lock her stuff down. I imagine she is quite savvy about the whole internet thing, she's young.

When I Googled my T, just got her Psychology Today ad. I'm kind of glad that's all I got. She's very private and I respect that.

Another reason why it is good to Google your Therapist is that you may find out certain things about them that you might want to discuss with them, such as their interests or where they grew up which was the case with a prior Therapist of mine.
