I am wondering because they seem to vary greatly. Ex t required three days notice. Another t I had required a week and t1 only a day! They all charged if you cancelled outside of the required notice.
Personally I think a week is a bit extreme.

Mine was 48 hours. However as l was always "quitting" at the 48 hour point, my T said l had to give 7 days notice, ie. we had to discuss any breaks within the previous session. This has been helpful, although annoying.

It's supposed to be 24 hours, but I can cancel anytime. My T is super flexible.

BTW, 3 days? What if you get the flu? I'd never agree to that.

I am so thankful my T is very flexible. I have never cancelled but one time I should have because of a work emergency and when I told him he said that since it's not a habit he wouldn't care if it was last minute. I would feel weid though without giving a day's notice.

Oh wow. My T's cancellation policy (per the paperwork) is 24 hours. The paper said that Monday appt's had to be cancelled by 9 on Fridays, but she hasn't charged me for one yet and i've cancelled as late as Saturday before. I think part of it is because you don't have to schedule through the office (online) so it's not like she's missing out on any potential clients due to no one being in the office.

I have to pay for cancelled sessions regardless of how far in advance I cancel. But I don't have to pay for sessions I attend, so that's not a problem.

Clients have to cancel within 24 hours of appointments. That said, I've had T cancel on me with the clinic calling 90 freakin' minutes before my appointment. Wonder if I should charge them? *disgruntled grumble*

Exactly, I once lost my voice and still had to pay...grrr, I know they have to make money but empathy goes out the window in cases like that!

My therapist does not charge for cancelled appointments. I have never missed one without notice, and very rarely missed one with notice.

The community mental health clinic used to have a 24 hour cancellation policy. I had car problems & was sitting in the mechanics waiting room when i looked at my appointment schedule & realized i was supposed to be in my appointment 1/2 hour before. Ended up paying for that oops.

Last fall I pilled my dogs & myself into my truck to head to my appointment. Leo had been having some teeth problems & just after i left my driveway he was pawing at his mouth & blood was all over his paw & it was like he was choking. I pulled over & called my t's office told them what was happening & i had to head to the vet & not my appointment. He had emergency surgery & all his teeth were removed.

Next week i went in expecting to have to pay the no show charge & they said they didn't do that any longer....i have to admit i was pleasantly surprised as the vet bill was huge & i don't have money to throw away.

Technically it is 24 hours for both my pdoc and my T, but I rarely cancel. When I have cancelled within that limit, the circumstances were emergencies beyond my control, and neither of them have ever charged me. Our T has charged my husband because he got in a very avoidant habit of canceling at the last minute. It helped rein my husband in again and refocused on the work he needed to do in therapy, so that was justified and actually quite helpful.

24 hours. However, I once no-showed because I was in the hospital having emergency surgery. She didn't charge me for that session. She said it would be "inhuman" to charge me for missing my appointment because I was unconscious and on the operating table! It was also the only appointment I had missed in 3 years. She said for clients who never miss their appointments and then have a true emergency, she doesn't charge. However, if a client has a pattern of no-shows/quitting/rescheduling, she does charge for missed sessions.

My T doesn't have a cancellation policy. I have never canceled/missed a session (but my T did cancel on me once)

I told her once before about my dentist policy, and she was shocked that people/companies do that. I told her maybe she should make some policies of her own. Her response was that maybe she's too nice, but she could never do that.

In fact several times she has told me that she expected me to not show up and to not tell. In the beginning she thought that I'd quit seeing her w/o telling her.

The office I go to has a 48 hour policy. I've cancelled last minute because of traffic once and because my son way sick, and my pdoc did not charge me. It seems to be left up to the discretion of the provider.

My T's office has a cancellation fee $55 if it's not canceled at least 24 hours prior.
I have only canceled once. But they didn't charge me because I was trying to get into an emergency session with pdoc.
They do reminder calls about 48 hours before.
I think if it's a true emergency they would excuse it and not charge.

At her private practice T is wonderful when it comes to this...If I am sick she doesn't care if it is literally the last minute she would much rather I stay home and not give her whatever I have... I have never missed an appointment for illness. A couple of times I have called last minute to explain what was going on but since it was nothing serious she saw me anyway.

She also encourages me to contact even last minute if anything comes up with my kids. She knows how important it is for me to be there when my kids have functions, meetings etc. I have cancelled a couple of times for this....

I have never paid a few.

My T's standard policy is 24 hours. However, she's told me before that if something comes up same day and I need to cancel, to not worry about it (ex: bad weather, personal emergency, etc).

For all her clients: you can cancel whenever you want, even five minutes before. For teens, she recently started a policy, thanks to my input, that they need to give twenty-four hours to cancel, because they didn't feel like coming. And, the money is to be paid from their funds or xtra work around the house to earn the money to pay her. My kid wished up when he was going.

24 hours unless I'm sick. He told me if I'm ever sick and cancel (even an hour before session) I won't be charged if I can reschedule that same week. I think his policy is totally reasonable.

Usually 24 hours but if it's an emergency I can cancel pretty much anytime.
