Has your therapist ever said anything that was crazy, either about themselves, or about your therapy?

Perhaps when she said that she thought my lack of eye contact issue with her would be resolved when we figured out and talked over the reasons why I wasn't looking at her. It wasn't that simple because I knew it wasn't just going to happen. I know my mind: it's stubborn and I need to force myself to do things when I'm not comfortable. That's the only way I grow. Perhaps crazy isn't the right word for this though.

Another crazy thing she said was on our last day together. She was supposed to have made me a list of books to read to continue our work together after termination. But she didn't have it ready for me and she confessed that she was intimidated. She said she thought that I was well-read and that I had already formed a lot of opinions about Psychology. I was really surprised that she felt that way and found it so ridiculous that I couldn't help but chuckle. It's so crazy to think of her being intimidated by me at all-- obviously I'm not going to judge her. And I just don't find myself a threatening person at all since I'm so quiet, passive, and reserved. What a role reversal!

My therapist is wonderful. But there was a time he said something crazy-insensitive about me adopting a child one day if I find I'm too old to have kids. Obviously men don't understand the pull many women have to experience a pregnancy. Adoption wouldn't satisfy that biological pull. In the moment I didn't say anything but it still stings months later.

Telling me about his experience performing surgery while in Vietnam. It was scary.

Telling me I had better character than his daughter-in-law. That was a surprise.

Making me choose all of my precriptions for 3 years-telling me I was "perfectly capable".

Telling me what happened with a patient after I told him she raged to me in the waiting area for over a half hour about all her experiences with psychiatrists, and telling me that my T terminated her. She was in the waiting room to see the therapist in the office next to him now. He did not terminate her.

Sharing in my fantasies about him; taking on the role I ascribed to him.

Telling me about a patient who asked to have sex with him after treatment was done.

Reading me stories and tucking me in!!!!!

I have lots more stories...This is former T, BTW....

Thanks, this gave me a short break from thinking about wanting to die.

hmm, I don't think my T has said anything that I would consider off the wall or "crazy"... I don;t think any of my former T's have either... I may have to think about this longer.

Well, wouldn't call it crazy. Once, he leaned in, a warned me that once out of marriage, i needed to watch out for master manipulators.
Sort of etched into my memory bank, which is the 'crazy' thing.

Ex T when I was living in Wales and only allowed 10 sessions said after the 5th session: You're fine now and don't need to come back. So she terminated me on the spot...
At that time I was only diagnosed with depression, and to her I was fine because that week I had been very active instead of spending my days in bed. What she didn't realize was that the only reason I was this active was because I had to take my horse to an equine hospital for extensive testing, and he needed me there.

Current T sometimes says things like "that's crazy", "only someone with BPD can believe this". I absolutely hate it when she says this, but at the same time it's always a wake-up call.

My T is always finding something positive in what we talk about but this one seemed like the craziest stretch. We were talking about feelings that lead to SI.

"Your baseline feeling is numb/withdrawn so the idea that you are feeling something instead of numbness is a strange twisted kind of positive."

Mostly jokes ... He's such a funny guy and I'll just burst out laughing because our senses of humor match so well. One of the last times he joked in a crazy way, he continued with an unrelated serious topic after about a minute, but it was so funny that I would randomly burst out laughing again as he was now talking about touchy issues with my parents, but I just couldn't get the sudden joke out of my head. He just asked me if I could hear what he was saying too and he let me keep laughing for a while.

I really wish I could share some of these jokes with you guys, but they're just very peculiar and recognizable if he ever read this forum, besides they're not as funny in English.

On the (slightly) more serious side, once he was trying to tell me that he loves me and the fact that we're not friends doesn't mean he doesn't love me. But he shied away from really saying ''I love you"and got into an unexpected somewhat longwinded speech about how he loves his clients as much as he loves his friends. Then we started joking about how that sounded But he was basically saying he loves me, in a very roundabout but obvious way. That was sweet and entirely unexpected.

Lots!

She's told me I should look into Shaminism. Told me its my fault I'm infertile (it's DH's factor!) She said I ate like a bird in front of her. She told me I should just adopt without listening to my own needs.

Lastly; she told me she doesn't record notes anymore for her clients!

She did give me a hug last week which makes up for it.

She asked me if I would be her T when I started practicing.

At the end of one session she told me "go finish your period and come back when it is done!" (jokingly) because I was being so difficult the whole time.

When she lost her phone she said she used backup contacts on her computer to retrieve her friend's number, my number and her son's number because all of that information is erased if someone guesses her phone's password wrong 3 times. I thought it was weird that I was one of the 3 she scrambled to save.

Many times she has said "I wanted to send this to you and my son" when she sees some sort of interesting or inspirational video or picture.

It's unusual to leave a session without laughing at least once because she says the strangest things.

I was once talking about how its so hard to be in my body sometimes, because of the ED and history of sexual assault, and how sometimes I just wish I didn't have one (a body)....

and my pdoc said-"But what about sex??"

I definitely turned bright red, but it opened up an important conversation. One of the things that I love about her is that she is very straightforward. Sometimes I can spend a whole session dancing around things.

I told her I was angry at her recently and she responded enthusiastically with "That's good!"

She has also said she was thinking of me at random times, like driving through the city I live in and passing some apartments (I just moved to an apartment), or walking through the store and passing something I had mentioned needing to buy.

It's just weird to think she spends any time thinking about me outside of the hour she spends with me each week.

In this scenario I'm not sure if it's so much what she said but how she responded. It was the end of our session and she asked me like she says almost every session (which bugs me btw because there is usually no time), "Is there anything else you'd like to say." I told her I knew we didn't have any time but that I was mad at her and I didn't want to leave angry. That was the first time I had told her I was angry and not too long before this I had stormed out of her office when the session ended.

Anywho, her face lit up and said, "okay let's talk about it!" She was so excited I expressed my feelings that I stayed 15 minutes later that day.

I found it so strange she was excited but those kind of things are the reason she feels so safe.

I've had my male T ask if I could feel when I ovulated because his girlfriend could.

My other T told me that her boyfriend knows she has 1 client that she really worries about, and when I called her when I stabbed myself, he knew it was me.

My therapist in college would always make me do deep breathing exercises and practice mindfulness whenever he had a lot going on throughout the day and if he felt tired and didn't want to get all stressed.

Oh yeah and we got into an argument about natural selection which was kind of funny because I schooled him in it

Anyways, he would always either question my faulty beliefs or attempt to raise conscious awareness about the issues that are deterring me from my goals and values.

And because I was seeing him for my ADHD he would say "When I was in elementary school, I had so much energy that I had to take tests standing up because I couldn't control myself...I don't have ADHD". That's the craziest thing he would really say because he was sort of soft spoken and laid back (total hippie, and mindfulness/meditation enthusiast). He would always say "I don't have ADHD" and I would just say aren't you lucky, why don't you just rub it in. Like he was defensive about not having ADHD but he was definitely a hippie when he was in school. Cool guy which is why I didn't freak out and start shouting in therapy which is what I used to do with others because they were just so incompetent.

I think after seeing how it affected me, he was thankful that neither he, his wife, or any of his children had ADHD because he would always repeat that same statement. Honestly, tho I think all therapists especially the clinical psychologists should be like him more or less like laid back and calm. Most Clinician's lose the humanistic touch after several years in the field.

Sounds like my T. He said he was lucky if I said one sentence to him about feelings when we first started. Last session was a paragraph and he was excited. It was weird.

It was crazy to me...

I have two extreme sides to myself: logical and emotional, and they are constantly at war. She wanted me to give my emotional side a name so she can directly address that side?!?!?!

I told her I'm not two different people and that I find that extremely weird. I explained that I also feel it's weird that people name their body parts. She said, that people name their pets and that's normal. I said that people name their cars and that's weird. She gave up after that...lol

Oh! And she guessed when I was going to start my menstrual cycle! That was so disturbing especially since I normally don't have any PMS symptoms. I told her to never do that again.
