I've always been curious why alot of Ts have a couch. My last T did not, but had these odd comfortable chairs set up in different parts of the room. I always choose the farthest away. My current T has a couch and two chairs on either side of the couch. I have always sat on the couch. But one thing I hate is sitting right where the last person sat because there is heat from their butt! I want to confuse T and sit in one of the chairs.

CBT T and I meet in a dr.'s clinic setting but he has his own office elsewhere.

So the room we meet in is teeny tiny--chairs only-no couch. Not the most comfortable office!

oh yeah, we sit right across from each other, only 4 feet or so. Sometimes if he stretches out a leg he rests it on the side of my chair.

I could write a very similar post, the previous T had only one simple chair for a client and it was okay, the current T has a horrible couch and two simple chairs - I'd prefer to sit on any of the chair but their location is so weird (90 degree angle to T's chair) and if I wanted to put them on the "right" place I'd have to first move the couch... So I sit on this horrible couch...

I think some have a couch to increase the comfort level/ warmth in their office. But I think a lot of T's don't have choice in the matter and take what they are given. My Pdoc has a regular chair that is fine for 20 minutes but not 50. My T has a loveseat and she sits directly across from the end of it.

There are two couches, set at an L shape. She sits on the far end of one and I sit on the far end of the other.

I sit on the couch; it's comfortable and a neutral color. She sits in a big chair with a pattern that clashes with the carpet, or maybe it's an area rug. I used to sit farther away on the end of the couch, but now I sit directly across from her. She moves her chair closer to me when we hold hands.

My ex-T had white couch and two black comfy chairs facing it. I always sat on the couch as that was obviously for clients but I would rather sit in the chair. My T claimed that space so I never did.
My current T has comfy chairs with pillows and blanket already there and I like the smaller space as I can fold my legs better and as it is wicker so great to "play" with haha.

I started out on the couch, across from T, but then, it started to feel too far away from her and I moved to the chair that was next to her. She has her office arranged with a couch, coffee table in the middle, and then two chairs opposite the couch, with an end table between the chairs. T sits in the chair closest to the door.

I sit on the couch. T sits either in his desk chair or in the armchair by the patio door. I always sit in the same corner of the couch. It's my spot. I tried the armchair once, but it felt REALLY weird.

I used to lie on the couch holding a very large pillow across my chest and abdomen. Sometimes curl up around the pillow.

Had to have that pillow!!

I am such a fussbudget...lol

I sit on the little bench under the window, I stalk, I pace, if angry I sit on the chair in the corner or stand behind the door...

My favourite is when we both get down on the floor....feels like he can be more trustworthy and a confidant.

I hate T's that hide behind a desk or have chairs taller than me.
I do like sitting at a 90 degree angle so my hair hangs down to protect me...lol
I'm such a wuss.

DEFINITELY been known to move chair or bench or whatever where I want it. Even grabbed the base of T's chair lately and rolled him over where I wanted him. That was new and kind of shocked him. At least he didn't yawn!!!

That's interesting - is that because there are no chairs in your T's office, or no good chairs, or because of your rebellious nature?
Thanks for this!

We sit on the floor (my T sits on a cushion). When I first started going, we sat on chairs but I didn't like those and wanted to move to the floor.

My T has recently acquired two couches which sit perpendicular to each other. We now sit on the floor, leaning against one of the couches. I like to sit next to my T, and I refuse to sit next to him on a couch because it just makes me think of two middle-aged people on a date. I have no idea why I think that - it made my T laugh though.

That sounds great!

I sit on a moderately comfortable chair with one and on a not comfortable chairish thing with another.

The only place for clients to sit is on a couch. I sat there for the first session and was quite uncomfortable, mainly because I have long legs and the couch is sink-in-able and pretty low to the ground. So I rebelled!

There are identical chairs in the waiting room but I always take the same one...except one time someone else was sitting there. Why didn't they realize that it was my chair?

Mine has a couch, and two chairs. He always lets me sit first, and for some reason I have always chosen one of the chairs, the left one. And then he always gets the couch. So many times I have been tempted to just sit on the couch and let him have one of the two chairs. Why can't I have the comfortable spot?? But I feel like in doing that, especially next session, may be viewed as some form of me "acting out." Maybe another time would be better, haha. Only once has he ever came and sat on the other chair to my right, next to me. He was drawing something and had to show it to me. Otherwise, he stays right there on the couch, and me on that stupid chair.

It makes me wonder what other clients pick. And oddly enough, "my" chair is never warm when I come in. I dunno. People like routine, including me. I feel like I would really mess up the dynamic if I chose his precious couch to sit on. :P

My favorite seating arrangement at a therapist (well, actually he was a pdoc) was with one whose office was out of his home sitting on cliff overhanging the Gulf of Mexico. I sat it a big leather chair looking out a huge plate glass window while watching the waves and gulls. Gorgeous. The pdoc was no great shakes, but his view was heaven.

In both her home office and her regular office she has has loveseat and 2 chairs. I sit on the right side of the love seat in both offices. She sits in one of the chairs. I prefer her home office because it is more homey and smaller. However, she only sees clients in her home office once a month when she has Saturday hours. It rarely works out so that I have Saturday available when she has hours.
