i have canceled ... probably more than too many appointments with my therapist, i do really like her but i have this problem about leaving the house, going to public place and meeting someone i haven't known for very long to talk about sensitive topics

i usually go having no idea what to say to her or what to talk about, i just try to go with the flow and play it by ear because i dont want to be there and am so nervous/uncomfortable being out in public in a clinic

is it possible that my therapist understands my position and isn't mad at me about canceling my appointments?

i would love to utilize therapy but its just so alien to me why do i have to be so social phobic?

Can you talk to her about this and about how you're feeling? And then ask her if she's angry at you for it? It's possible, I know that some T's have a pet peeve around canceling. But it's just as possible that she understands and is totally cool with it. The only way to know is to ask, though.

Patients who cancel are a fact of life.
The danger is that a lazy therapist would just put it down to lack of commitment.
A good therapist would try to find out why. Have you discussed it?

Therapy is alien. A good therapist will admit that.

You can talk to her about it, and maybe come to agreement about it. If leaving the house is part of what you struggle with, I'm sure she'll understand, but may want to have a certain amount of notice/fee arrangement so it doesn't impact her income too much if it happens a lot.

I skipped a lot of sessions when I first started trauma work, my therapist at the time told me he'd hold my hour for me whether I showed up or not, that no-showing wasn't going to make him drop me (aka "You're not getting out of this that easily."). That gave me a bit of a kick to go there and get to work.

If you are having trouble utilizing talk therapy yet, I would talk to my doctor and see if other types of therapy/work might be possible to get in a position so you are not quite so socially phobic and then can try with going to a clinic/therapy again. Therapy can't help if you don't go.

thanks everyone

my therapist told me a month or so ago that she will be leaving in july to go back to school, so i'll be "losing" her.. maybe this is why im having trouble? because im afraid to work on a relationship that i know is going to end?

it kinda sucks because i do like her and she's really kind
