Tonight at last I meet the new T and hope we click.

I am a nervous wreck, afraid I'll say the wrong thing or not enough...

I SO want this to be a place to land and stay a while and find the relief I want.

Scary.

Don't worry Echoes-- the wonderful thing about therapy, is that there really isn't a "wrong" thing to say. It is a difficult thign to get used to, but can be a wonderful freedom. It's also easier said than done. Let us know how it went.

Maybe ECHOES went to her fantastic new psychoanalytic T, and was "cured" in one session. So she has no reason to hang out in the Psychotherapy forum anymore.

Thank you all so much. I feel so cared about here! I'm sorry it took me so long to check in.I was too emotionally drained to post then lost the internet.

It's hard to tell after one session. I don't know. I liked her but.. she is not a psychologist. She is a MS LMHC and I'm not sure how I feel about that. She is psychoanyltic in orientation and is a cadidtate at the institute I contacted, which means she's highly qualified according to someone I know.

I thiink I didn't do well.

She likes to meet several times before deciding if she and the client will work well together. That feels stressful and of course I wanted her to decide that night.

She is not close, I don't have a car. She offered another evening appointment but I would have to borrow a car again and i can't do that for every session; the bus to that area doesn't run after 5:30. At first I thought she said she didn't work on Fridays but would come in late afternoon. I didnt' want her doing that for me.. So I left with no appointment and thinking I had to start looking again. She offered to see if there was someone else near me or look at my insruance company's list of providers because she said that some T's will say they are CBT only to get on an insurer's list, and she might know more about them. ... Anyway I cried all the way home (and pretty much since then) , then called her when I got home and checked the bus schedule and decided Friday would be ok, called & left a message. She called me at work Thursday to set an appointment for the 9th and reminded me she'd said that she had been thinking of adding some late afternoon hours on Friday. I'd said but I thought you didn't want to work on Fridays.. so it was nice of her to kind of reassure me like that; I appreciated it.

She was easy to talk to. Calm, secure, and really wanted to talk with me! She asked me more about things I said. .. I think I like her a lot. I told her things I always avoided talking about before. She ws accepting and non-judgemental. I think I could feel comfortable there.

Just not sure about that degree.

So, yeah. It went well.

I thiink I got what I wanted.

Yikes.

That's wonderful! It seems like maybe it all came together because you two are a good fit. Gotta watch Forensic Files, will write more later, lol.... I am glad for you, though.

She is a lisenced social worker with a Masters degree in social work.

That probably means she is into inter-personal theories???? Could be reading too much into that... But social workers typically focus on the relationship between individuals and their greater social environments, so that is cool.

I don't think you need to worry about her qualifications.

Sounds like she does want to work with you... And that the three session thing is a mutual decision.

ECHOES! Sounds like you have some mixed feelings. But overall, it sounds positive. I'd bet you'd have known right away if things had NO potential. So meet with her a few more times and then decide if the potential's there! I agree that you don't need to worry too much about the qualifications -- just wait and see if you can continue talking to her and if you find her open. Keep us updated on how things go!

That means she has a Master's in some field and her licensure is as a "Licensed Mental Health Counselor." Do you know what her Master's degree is in? Maybe it is Psychology. That is a common combination of degree and licensure. Master's in Social Work is MSW and their licensure is LMSW, I think, so it sounds like she is not a social worker. ECHOES, for the record, my T has only a Master's in Psychology and is fantastic.

Alexandra, in the U.S., MS means Master of Science. The question is what field is the MS in? MS in Psych?

Ah. It is MSc over here... That would make sense then :-)

I'm pretty sure that in order to see clients while you are training at an institute you need the professional qualifications in order to see the clients in the first place. I was looking into that a little. Sometimes people are accepted to train in an institute from unrelated fields like english literature or womens studies or philosophy or whatever. These people can do the formal training (and it is reccomended that they undergo a course of analysis themselves) but they are NOT allowed to see clients.

I would guess psychology... But then my guesses thus far haven't been particularly on the ball ;-)
