Transference and countertransference.

I was putting the emphasis on FER but when I say the word 'transfer' I put it on TRANS. So I'm thinking maybe it's really TRANSference and counterTRANSference, even though that sounds really wrong to me. Have any of your Ts said the words and if so, how did they pronounce them?

Yes I thought transFERence too but my T said TRANSference.
I am in the UK which might make a difference. I know some words have different emphases in spoken American and British English.

I stress the first syllable in "transference", which is also what the Oxford English Dictionary says is correct. Stressing the second syllable is possible in American English, though the first syllable stress is more common there, too; Merriam-Webster's dictionary of American English gives both pronuncuations as correct, but lists "TRANSference" before "transFERence".

Yes, I've been training with UK-based therapists/trainers too and that is how they pronounce it. Same seems to be true in American English (at least that's how they pronounced it in In Treatment).

Most Ts, myself included, put emphasis on TRANS. That being said, who cares?
