We each sat in recliner chairs: both comfortable, but his also swiveled. They were about 3 feet apart, at an angle so that we weren't facing each other directly, but could easily look at each other, with a table and lamp between. There was another armchair across from the recliners, a bit more directly opposite his chair, and I sometimes would sit there, too. The office had windows, but with curtains pulled. There was a couch and coffee table and floor lamp across the far end of the room for when he had couples sessions. There were also a couple of bookcases. I never sat on the floor, nor removed my shoes or curled up in the recliner. It was very comfortable just to sit squarely. I do think he gave thought to the furniture arrangement because he kept the set-up the same through 4 differently shaped office spaces. The combination of soft lighting, and the angle of the chairs to allow for, but not compel, eye contact was deliberate. He practiced mostly in psychodynamic and CBT oriented ways.
