What is the difference?

not much except maybe one is run by a psych hospital vs a general hospital's psych unit... though I am not sure. I know where I live there is almost no distinction other than who runs it. both are short term, medication centered, and offer no therapy. It may be different where you live though, because I know it was different when I lived in a different part of the country.

As far as I know, there isn't much difference. Most psych units anymore are crisis stabilization units. They are designed for short-term stays (a few days to at most a few weeks) with the goal of stabilizing a patient enough for outpatient care. Most insurances will only pay for this type of psychiatric inpatient treatment and will not pay for long-term residential treatment.
