T has a plain office but a lot of board games on his desk. next to the couch he has a box of toys, like balls you can throw around or squeeze. We played some board games together while we talked and threw a ball across his office from time to time.
Thanks for this!

The more fun and creativity we can pack into this one life we have, the better, I say.

If it doesn't interfere with therapy or distract...

Out, out, inappropriate age-appropriateness!!!
Thanks for this!

No she doesn't but I think it would be AWESOME to bring in a huge set of Legos and we could sit on the floor and build things as we talked. I might do it, she wants to work on childhood issues, this would help me connect.

THANK YOU for this tread..

I get plenty of fun and creativity in my real life, and there is definitely room for joking and laughter in my therapy, sometimes. Not using toys in therapy has nothing to do with age appropriateness for me. It just wouldn't be helpful or move my therapy forward. I need to use words, and the pauses between words.

I'm like that usually, too, actually. If my post sounded like I think that adult thoughtfulness has no place in effective therapy, that was unintentional. I was playfully rallying against the attitude that therapy for adults should never include toys.

My life motto in general goes something like this: niches, niches and yet more niches. A niche for everybody!!!! I should put that in my signature line.

If you have a niche, scratch it!

Btw, this was once misspelled in an article in a detroit newspaper in the 1980's about EDS finding its nitch in the business world. Best misspelling ever. Just in case that reporter thought nobody noticed...

Oh, I couldn't agree more. We are all individuals! ("Crowd: "Yes! We are all individuals!" One man: "I'm not!"")

My new T has toys in her office because some of her clients are children. I would not, however, play with any of the toys. About the only thing I would do if asked to is a puzzle. I hate role playing therapy. But that's just me.

My T sometimes has toys in her office if she is seeing a child that day and they are Legos. How can I NOT play with Legos?? But we do other things that are fun...like decorating cookies at Christmas, carving pumpkins at Halloween, painting a treasure box...and lots of other things. She definitely knows how to have fun!

He does but they're in a chest on the floor for kids since he works with all ages.
I do play with the pillows on the sofa though. Its that kind of velvet-y fabric that changes shades when you swipe it one way. I always sorta doodle on them LOL
