My T has tried CBT, Somatic, psychodynamic, and others. I just can't get behind any of the theories. She tried really hard but I resist her the whole way. I think I am just not cut out to do the "hard work" that is needed. I feel sorry for my T and I probably frustrate the hell out of her. Maybe I should just give up on therapy.

I don't care about therapy theories. I think it's ok not to care. I really don't understand having therapy in order to discuss therapy. I am not paying for that. You don't need to quit. It's your therapy so choose what to talk about

I maybe misunderstood. I thought she wanted to discuss those actual theories. Well did you try just talk about your concerns and goals etc and go from there?

I have trouble even laying out goals. She has tried these different theories to see if one works. I am starting to think I might not believe in therapy or be ready to change in any meaningful way.

It's really hard to give any advice in situations like this, because indeed it could be you're not ready to make deep changes at this point or could be your therapist is not a good therapist or maybe even it's possible you're already making some changes but just are not aware of them or maybe they're too little to be of significance for you.

Obviously all these different theories are about helping people change and to relieve distress, and if you feel you have even a slightly better reaction to one, it might be worth trying that route again. I think overall when a person tries multiple approaches, it can also give them a sense that therapist doesn't know what they're doing or the case is hopeless and I hope you are not in that place. If change really matters to you on a personal level, you will find a way that works for you, maybe not with this therapist or at the present time or even using therapy at all. Sometimes change does happen but in most unexpected ways....

Resistance is in the relationship, not the individual. The relationship matters more than the specific theories. Perhaps another T would work better with you.

I tend to be skeptical that a T can pick up any old theory and be effective with it. Someone who is really good at CBT, say, and really believes in it, is, in my view, likely to be less experienced, less effective, less of a fit, in, say, psychodynamic. What is her "best" theory, the orientation that suits her best? Perhaps someone else who has a different orientation as their main resource would be more effective with you.
