5 letters? Wow! I have to laugh. My name is only 7 letters long, but 5?

I have a friend whose name is 6 letters long, is a German name and ends in "er" and people around here constantly mispronounce it. He just rolls his eyes when it happens. I happen to live in an area that's not very diverse ethnically, and around here, if your surname didn't come from the UK or Ireland, it's probably going to get mispronounced.

I wouldn't like it if my therapist couldn't pronounce my name, even if the reason was that they were dyslexic and had an auditory memory deficit. *no pity* I think I would ask them to learn to say it and to spell it, but I'm pushy like that.

My t works for large clinic and billing and scheduling done by others. She has no need to see my last name so perhaps she would misspell it. I am not sure how to spell hers either. I don't know how it is important. In fact I think I am not sure I know correct spelling of her first name either. If has tricky spelling. Our names aren't American

I would be hurt.

My family and relatives frequently mangle my name or call me by my brothers' names (I'm female and our names are distinctively different!) so names are sensitive to me.

I was very hurt when my pdoc forgot my name but then, he does have a lot of patients.

I wonder if my T would forget my name too as she has quite a lot of inpatients and outpatients.

If she did, I would feel as though it'd just be repeating the message that I don't matter.

That just last name. If people forgot my first name it would be weird. But do people really get that attached to last names? Has no special meaning to me neither my maiden nor married names

I was thinking this same thing. My T doesn't really have to write my name or anything as he has people who do scheduling and billing, so he doesn't visually see my full name in print regularly. It wouldn't surprise me particularly if he stumbled over my last name (he hasn't, but it wouldn't surprise me) since he generally only deals with me by first name. I don't know if he'd pass a spelling test on my last name; it isn't hard to spell, but it is an unusual spelling. People always think it is spelled differently (and always mispronounce it).

I grew up with a maiden name that is horrendous to spell and pronounce, so I think I'm just not very sensitive so such things. NO ONE got my name right growing up because it is such a booger (very rare German name with a million letters). I didn't take it personally then, and even though my married name is much simpler, it still is quirky enough that I'm used to people struggling with it. Just doesn't faze me.

Now, my T on several occasions over the year as called my by the wrong first name. It was always the same person -- both names start with the same letter, so it's just a slip. I've wondered if i remind him of that particular client somewhat though. Doesn't particularly bother me when it happens; just a brain fart.

Then there was the time my pdoc had the wrong file. Apparently he has another patient with almost the same last name (I suspect it is the more common spelling of my last name). That was a bigger issue as he was asking me about meds that I'd never taken. It didn't take long for him to realize they had put out the wrong file.

Oh I wonder if I can beat you in foreign last names completion lol my maiden name has 12 letters. It is impossible to spell correctly. I am divorced but kept my ex name because no way I was going back to maiden! My married name is easier but also unusual. In fact both my maiden and married names are so unique that the only other people out there are our very few relatives.

I wouldn't take it too personally. I'd find a way to bring it up in conversation like...."So and so's kid was like 'hey miss johnson' to me ...."

You beat me. Mine's only 10. I have vivid memories of learning to spell my last name when I was little. It took a while. My husband definitely had to work at it; he's dyslexic -- yikes!

Lol mine also has few variations of spelling in English. Could be 11 or 12 letters. . I haven't used it though for the past 30 years. Of course my family still does. My brother has boys so they will carry it on
