Both of mine are 35+. Which at least gives me the confidence that they've seen everything. Despite the fact that one of them calls me a "distinctive" client.

The first one says she has over 35 years and the second about 20 (it was her second career).
The first one has said she has not had a client like me before -but I don't believe her.

Why not? You've mentioned this before. Law of averages?

If she actually has that much experience - surely she has - I am not that unique. I don't think anyone is. My students fall into groups - each semester I get the same types. Not complete carbon copies - but types. So I really don't think it all that probable even it is possible. Do you believe you are a distinctive client?

I think many people I meet find me distinctive, but I can't imagine a therapist with that much experience would, or should, unless she hasn't been paying attention during those 35 years.

Students do fall into types. My least favorite were the princesses.

My ex-therapist had about 30 years of experience. He was jaded and blind and stuck in his ways. I don't think experience makes for a good therapist in many situations. So it means nothing to me.

The one I saw for seven months just had a few years experience and he was so much better than the ex.

I think in therapy a lot of experience can actually make a therapist more incompetent.

Current T about 30. I went to him specifically for his experience because I though it would help me unravel the transference issue with T1. T1 graduated in about 2007 so he wasn't very experienced.

I've had T's with a variety of years of experience: everything from fairly new to the work, to around 20 years to around 30. They were all very good at what they did. I would say the two with more experience probably moved me farther along the path to healing, and my most experienced (my current T) had the widest range of knowledge and skills and a very astute ability to use the right approach at the right time. He also had the highest level of education of the three and the broadest range of types of experience in the field -- research, educational assessment, clinical assessment, psychiatric hospital work, and private practice. I suspect his strong skills had much more to do with his broad range of education and experiences than with only his years of experience.

My psychiatrist started her first job post-residency about four months before she saw me for the first time, and I've been seeing her for almost two years. So two years, + four years of residency.

I think about five years as a counsellor initially, then retrained as a psychotherapist for about eight years roughly. So eight/ thirteen years depending what you count.

24 years. She's done a lot of different things over the years - worked with people with addictions, CSA, trauma, eating disorders and much, much more. She has a masters degree and studied criminology before doing her masters degree. Plus she has been trained to do EMDR, OEI, and Lifespan Integration Therapy. She has her own website and has her CV online. Looking at it I felt kind of intimidated by her, because she has done SO MUCH with her life. She's only 10 years older than me and compared to her, I have done NOTHING worth mentioning with my life. I'm still struggling to establish myself in a career, and I am single, no kids, just a whole lot of really low self esteem and other crap inside my head.

Around 35 years. . According to her she is old school in her approach. It works for me as she had lots of experience both as a therapist and in her personal life.

One of my former Ts was still in training when I saw her, and she was fantastic, until she unexpectedly ended therapy because she said I had reached my goals that I had stated at the beginning of therapy.

I actually have no clue how many years experience she has. She lists all the places she's worked at, but never lists time frame. I guess I could look her up on linkedin... She graduated in 2009. So I guess she has 10 years experience? Maybe less. Idk.

Never asked but I read her bio in her website, and combined with her age (mid 40s), I'd say between 15-20 years.
