Anyone know? Seems like it could benefit so many people. It would help me a lot but is too much money and no insurance seems to ever cover it. Just wondering if anyone knows why that is.

Modified DBT groups aren't expensive. I found one in my area for $30 a week.

Real DBT groups are expensive because you have group plus an individual T on call 24/7. No real DBT groups in my area accepts insurance. Well one at the hospital accepts Medicare, but I don't know if it's real or modified.

Do you have a county mental health clinic? Mine offers free groups if you're a patient there.

Have you tried searching psychologytoday.com?

I'll have to check on the county health clinic...I am a patient at the one in my area. I had no idea that the real DBT groups offered a t on call 24/7. Gosh, no wonder it is so much. Sounds like things could get real intense if the t is on call like that.
Also will try searching psychtoday - thank you!

I think costs vary. When I did DBT, the group cost $65 per session (1 1/2 hours) and my therapist charged what was normal for the region ($120/session). Both were billable to my insurance.

I've been trying to get my son into a DBT group and the costs range from $95 - $150 / session (not billable to insurance) plus a therapist (billable to insurance). The two groups I've identified are "by-the-book" DBT groups, not "modified"...plus parents attend.

As an aside - DBT groups don't typically offer a therapist on call. If you have a DBT-trained therapist, which some groups require, that therapist will provide coaching calls. These can be 24/7 or during a set time (mine offered them between 9 am and 8 pm). Coaching calls are not crisis calls or therapy-by-phone - they are designed to offer coaching in using skills, so you are supposed to be able to describe which skills you've tried before you call. Also, typically, if the call goes over a certain amount of time (typically 10 minutes or so), you will be billed for that time. If you have a DBT-trained therapist who is following the protocol, this will all be explained ahead of time and you should have a contract that describes it all.

Maybe my DBT group was modified; I'm not sure, but it was 2 hrs. per week and I think the charge was $50. I ended up paying about $10 a session with my insurance.

I didn't need a special DBT T. As long as group members had an individual T, it was okay.
