I've been in therapy several times over my 48 years. I was sexually abused as a child, and first entered therapy when I was in my late 20's.
I can be rather combative in therapy, and have had issues with the fact that my first therapist was into the recovered memory craze of the 1990's (and that's when I saw her). So, I'm very aware of their inadequacies (they are, after all, human). I left my last therapist because he shared his interest in Narconon and Scientology. I've considered that I may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (from the sexual abuse and seeing the abuse my dad perpetrated towards my mother), BPD and NPD have also been suggested. But, I'm doing fairly well, as far as I'm concerned. What I want to deal with right now, is the fact that I'm having a hard time making and following through on goals, so money is really starting to be an issue. I've made and followed through with goals in the past, but it's incredibly hard for me to do so without becoming consumed with them. So, I have a negative reaction to goals. I have this memory of being miserable while I was working on goals Will it be difficult to find a therapist who will help me work on this issue? I have this feeling that if I get into the office, the therapist will redirect me to whatever he/she thinks is important.

Have you considered a life coach?
If not a life coach, I'd suggest a CBT oriented therapist with a specialty in financial stress-type issues. |

Is there any special way to search for a life coach? I made a couple of feeble attempts before without success.

My T is also a life coach. I'm sure if you Googled "life coach" and your state or city, you'd get results. Even "life coach search" might bring up a national database.

I think if you state specifically that you want to work on these things a CBT oriented therapist will be helpful. A lot of them use a mix of psychodynamic and CBT so if you prefer that it shouldn't be hard to find. It irks me when I hear about Ts who gave their own agenda and don't listen to what clients want (especially when there is a history of trauma). So, I think you should be as direct as possible with prospective Ts so they understand what you want to get out of therapy. A good T will respect your own judgement and your wishes. I think you'll find one, it just may take some interviewing.m

I have huge anxiety over my finances but it's not main thing I work on in therapy. My t just keeps saying that whatever I feel is just a feeling and it won't kill me and she reminds me not to overspend. I have hard time working on goals too, but at least I spend less
