I consider a crisis when I simply feel I can't cope anymore (usually this means I'm actively thinking, planning and intending to act on suicidal thoughts another crisis would be if I feel my self-harm has gotten out of control.
In the past, i've had several crisis sessions. I went through 2 year-long+ periods of nearly constant suicidal crisis with severe depression and ptsd. There were times I met with my t multiple times in a day in an effort to stay out of the hospital. I don't remember much of that time though. At my clinic you can come any time during regular business hours for emergency session. They find someone who can talk to you and if they cant fit you in that day they will set an appointment for the following day.

It was much like a regular session except it was focused on my crisis. They define crisis there as the individual defines it.

It was very helpful.
