Even in a small town there are volunteer opportunities, surely?

If you like animals, volunteering at an animal shelter might be one way to go. Lots of people (myself included) find animals less anxiety-provoking than people, so it could be a more comfortable way to get out of the house and into the world.
Play to your strengths, I guess. Good luck. Hope you find something. |

A class might be fun, too. Community centers and continuing education departments have every class under the sun. I think that would be less stressful than volunteering because you can choose your level of engagement. If your social anxiety is such that just being out of the house and in the same room as strangers is already a win, then you can hang out in the corner and just absorb information. Once you're comfortable in the room, you can push yourself to be more gregarious--maybe talk to the person next to you, volunteer to answer a question.

This is a great site for seeing what opportunities exist in your area. You can browse what they have before signing up. Maybe you'll find out about something that will strike your fancy.

Like a veil thrown over the skin to secure its modesty, the screen partially removes from the mind the inner states of the body, those that constitute the flow of life as it wanders in the journey of each day.” — Antonio R. If you're not ready for humans, try working with animals.
