I have a great therapist (hope he never reads this, knowing my luck, he probably is on here). There are frustrations at times, as there are with any type of relationship. We have always been able to work through them (not something I am used to with previous therapists). I've been meeting with him for a little over a year now. There is no stucture or therapy goals. Private practice. Every other place I've gone to, these were the main focus. I miss the structure. I have mentioned this to him, but never in detail... so its not something that has been explored in more detail. I feel like I need to bring this up but am struggling to be able to. I am able to email him, and usually have no problem writing (emailing) what I need to, but do with this for some reason. I know, come up with my own goals regarding therapy, but have had trouble doing that as well. Any suggestions??

Hmm does he ask you at the start of your session what you would like to talk about? If he does could you just say you would like to set some goals and then go into the details? Then you are not criticising his method, just answering the question honestly.
My T doesn't really set goals either, we just go with whatever comes up. The odd time I've been stuck, I've handed the control back to her and she has mentioned goals etc which more helps to identify more issues to work on than provides structure, I think! |

Thanks. I'll give this a try tomorrow when I meet with him.
