I take back my previous post. When u don't pay or pay reduced fee ur not treated the same way as people that pay full price. There aren't as much days available to book an appt or the number of times u can go for month. They have the mindset that they are making u a favor providing the bare minimum.
P.S.: when is ur insurance that covers or some kind of aid they DO get paid people! |

I went through a state funding program so I did see therapy and Psychiatry for free until recently. The therapists are much better than the docs. I've been through 4 therapists within the last year and there was always some things I learned about myself with each one. I still attend the same facility and my new therapist is great. The only problem is me. I am very flaky. and stubborn when it comes to taking steps to change and help myself.
I suppose, depending where you go to seek therapy or the therapist you end up seeing, whether free or not, you may not like them, AT ALL.

I like the paying relationship. It equalizes things a bit more.

Where I live everyone has some kind of insurance so most people use insurance to pay for mental health services. That is how most Ts get paid at all and build up a client base. There are some that don't take insurance but that is the exception rather than the norm. So in that respect I don't see why there would any difference - so long as someone pays them that's all that matters.
If by free you mean seeing someone pro bono, then yes, I think the service may suffer. In my eyes they would be doing me a favor, and favors like that usually don't last very long. At some point they would need some kind of payment. |

good question. I know T is not in the field for the money. She collects a pension from her previous hospital job. She has always told me that she does not want money to be an issue. At one point I faced potentially losing my insurance. T said not worry as we would work something out. Even if I pay only my current copay. During times of extreme financial issues she has offered to not charge me my copay or I could pay her later or whatever. I have always refused. I feel she her services are worth way more than I pay. I would not want to see her without payment.
