Over here if someone has seen a therapist for more than about a year in many cases, another therapist won't see them. Or are they lying to me. I'm so fed up with this. Should I tell "them" the truth about how long I've seen therapist(s) for and make it likely I'll be rejected, again? What's up with this?

(( Fuzzy ))

What is the reason they do that?

I wouldn't lie.. not a good way to start out with a T.

Keep looking! You're weeding out the What's up with this? ones. Good riddance to them :waver_hello:

I guess I am not sure what to say. Have they explained why they won't see you if you have seen someone else for a while? You really are in a tough position. I personally stick with the truth but that does not make it the right course of action for you. I wonder what will happen when it comes out later in therapy how long you really saw your previous therapist. Would the new one consider this a breach of trust? I hope you come up wth a solution to the dilema you find yourself. Good luck.

I don't know who told you that but that's complete and utter rubbish!

There are good therapists out there who would NOT reject you, I'm sorry you have had so much trouble finding a good one.

Hugs to you!(((((((((((( Fuzzybear ))))))))))) What's up with this?

On the NHS the reason is money.

I think analysis is my only real option, that wouldn't be a waste of my time and money... What's up with this? What's up with this?

If someone is highly trained they should realise that the T(s) I saw were %#@&#!

Do you need to use the NHS? I don't know how it works exactly. Can you go off on your own and hire a therapist/analyst?

I went outside my insurance to find mine and I pay her myself. She reduced her fee for me too, when I asked to see her every week instead of every other week. I found her by contacting a psychoanalytic training institute.

So, keep looking and talking!

I agree that you should keep at it. A good therapeutic relationship must be built on trust, so don't give up, just keep at it.

Are there any resources you can tap into, such as a University training center, where you can find out in advance, who might be able to accommodate you? Just a thought. Best of luck.

Fuzzy, where's "here?" I'm easily confused...

Wouldn't a new therapist want records from the old one? My experience is that as soon as you mention a previous therapist the new therapist wants to request records. You can always deny the request, but then you're left having to explain why.

Contact your state APA, or AMA for assistance. They can immediately clarify any questions you have.

Fuzzy, I hope you find a satisfiable solution soon!

Fuzzybear, if it were me, I would tell them I had seen another therapist before, but I would not tell them for how long. I would consider that confidential. Is it your insurance who wants to know how long you saw a former therapist? (I am not sure what NHS is.) My insurance does not reimburse for my current T, so I pay him out of pocket. They only reimburse for 20 visits yearly for an approved T, anyway. After that, you're on your own. I put my therapy fees into my budget as a necessity. I scrimp in other areas, such as not going out for lunch or dinner, etc. I've also sold stuff on eBay to make extra cash and done some speculation too (bought stuff at one price and sold at higher and made some quick profit).

okiedokie, my current therapist never requested records from my former counselor. He trusted me to communicate to him what my issues were and what I wanted to work on. I would have thought it not a good sign if he wanted to see previous records. Plus, those records are confidential. If it were a pdoc, I could maybe understand, as the new one might want to see the meds history in detail. But a good therapist should be able to start from scratch with a new client.

Good luck, Fuzzybear. I hope you can get this worked out and find a good T who can help you. (((hugs)))

I love that you all have a "library" Web site: http://www.library.nhs.uk/mentalhealth/

Maybe they have an article in there that explains it or what can be done or shows where "good" therapists are to be found, etc.?

Fuzzybear,

If you go private you need to make sure you see a registered chartered psychologist, you will be able to find one using this website............

http://www.bps.org.uk/

If you want to find a psychologist via the NHS the normal route is through your GP doctor. You will need to see a clinical psychologist, unfortunately there is a long waiting list but worth getting your name on that list.

If you can share with your GP he may refer you to other counselling while you are waiting to see a psychologist. There are nurse therapists usually attached to GP surgeries.

Or your GP might refer you to a Community mental health team that have psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, community psychiatric nurses and social workers. One of the team may be able to help.

Also remember in therapy you can say as much or as little as you want to and go at the speed you want to, ie build up trust first.

Anyway, I hope this information helps.

With love. What's up with this?

Can you change your GP? Or see a different GP in the practice?

Just trying to help.

Im surprised at this fuzzy. I do vaguely remember Caroline who used to be here saying something similar. It seems very unfair.
