I was just interested that he spelt "dialed" like that. I would have expected two "l"s.

Dialed or dialing is correct for the US.

That's the reason I was interested to see it used by a NZlander. There is no reason why it wouldn't be used in a country where the variety of English is mainly based on BrE, and NZE has had more influences from AmE than AusE has. I didn't say it was odd, just that I didn't know it.

And of course there is always individual variation, so it might simply be CE's personal preference.
Thanks for this!

That's interesting. How has NZE been more influenced by AmE?

Well, World Englishes is not my own field so I'm not quite sure what the theories are as to why... NZE and AusE are quite distinct varieties just like AmE and BrE, and of course NZE and AusE are more like each other than they are like any other variety - and if you compare NZE and AusE to BrE and AmE, they will be more like one variety in some ways and more like the other in other ways. Still, I'm pretty certain that I have been told that there is a somewhat greater tendency in NZE towards AmE spellings and vocabulary, but of course I cannot find any sources for it right now.

I could swear I saw a post asking me about regional varieties of Swedish.... did I dream it? Anyway, there are very distinct regional differences; the regional dialects are dying slowly, but the accents are still alive and thriving. I could dig up some sound samples if anybody is interested

Some samples:
Roughly where my father is from (southwest)
Roughly where my mother is from (north)
Way down south (Scania, near Denmark)
West, near Norway (Dalecarlia) (I don't understand this one!)
Way up north
Gotland island (off the east coast)
I would be curious to hear how different these samples sound to people who don't understand the language at all... to me they are very different indeed, like Glaswegian versus Cockney versus Baltimore, but I have no idea if it's really that different when it's all just weird sounds.
My own accent is perhaps closest to this, but I have some sounds in my speech from my mother's Northern accent which people down here don't generally have.
Thanks for this!

Wow, I feel like the stupid one on here. I tool mostly honors, and the only big classes I took were Dual enrollment English 1010/1020 and Dual credit stats. Btw, big test in there to see if we get the college credit or not. Freaking out!

AP = Advanced Placement? (I think I may have heard the term mentioned on the Couch before - I'm reading up on it now but I'm not quite sure I understand it. I just don't know enough about the US college/university system, not from the students' point of view anyway. I have colleagues who have lived and worked in the US and who have told me about the tenure system, but how undergraduate courses work is pretty much unknown to me. I have to look up "college credit" next... )

Yes, Ap is advanced placement.
It goes from standard, honors, advanced honors, advanced placement, and IB. And, of course, Dual Enrollment is placed somewhere in there. You get college credit if you pass AP, IB, and dual credit exams. You also get credit for Dual Enrollment.
