I had a pdoc that would buy me items when I was inpatient. He would also give me money. He told me he could not be my Dr anymore bc he lost objectivity. He paid 25k for me to enter a residential program. That was when he told me he couldn't be my Dr anymore. We still catch up thru text sometimes...

I think this is a really important point. And this thread has made me realize that actually my therapist does treat me in very particular ways according to my own preferences. He sets up his office slightly differently for me, and there are several situations that he handles in a way that won't stress me out. I assume he pretty much does that for everyone, so it's more "particular" than "special". I really appreciate how adaptable he is to my own preferences, and how hard he works to understand me.

Agreed. I agree with everyone else that actually telling a client that they are special in some way to the T can be very harmful. I'd completely dismiss my T if she said anything like that to me. The few times she's used "therapist-y" phrases at me, I roll my eyes at her and said "Nice therapist remark" haha.

I did not get special treatment though I got a lot from my therapist: unlimited, but mostly answered emails (~1600), email therapy, unlimited phone calls, and 2-3+ hour sessions as many times a week as needed. We did reparative adult attachment therapy. She has done it for other before me and after me, so it was not special treatment. She only does this particular therapy with one or two people at a time, because it is time intensive. She also prefers to have a limited case load of 15-20 clients at a time doing mostly short term couples therapy (85%).

I would feel too much pressure to be perfect, if I was singled out. All her clients get email, etc.
