I may be getting a new t. One of the specialties of a potential new t is women's issues. What does this mean? Counseling for health issues such as infertility? Issues such as rape? Just women's empowerment? I am a women but not sure if I need a t that specializes in this.

I would think those sorts of issues, maybe in addition to female sexual issues and dealing with misogyny e.g. in the workplace?
Thanks for this!

Good question. I would guess it's something along the lines what you've mentioned. Perhaps ask the t? Also, simply because they have expertise in that area doesn't mean your therapy has to even tackle any of that. I saw a t who dealt a lot with "men's health", but I'm a woman, so we never touched on it, it was just something he advertised as one of his areas of expertise...
Thanks for this!

Two of the ones I've seen listed that specialty. To them it meant infertility, miscarriages, postpartum depression, various gynecological disorders, etc.

I would assume women's issues mean that your T will be sensitive to stuff such as misogyny and sexism, plus all the other stuff people here have mentioned. You're lucky. I haven't found a therapist with that kind of speciality yet.
Thanks for this!

I would agree with the issues you listed; health issues primarily. As we age so do our hormone levels. These wreak havoc on us mentally and for some women are a trigger source for our mental illnesses becoming apparent. For example, both bipolar and atypical depression often don't reveal themselves until women reach their mid-40s, just as a woman is entering pre-menopause.

I believe too that some experiences in life and relationships are unique to women - just as men have their own unque problems too.
Thanks for this!

Sexism, misogyny, rape-culture, wage-gap, children, pregnancy, etc.

If this is a male therapist I can see why he would feel the need to list it as a 'specially'if only to highlight the fact that he's aware and open to discussion on these topics and assure any potential female clients that might assume otherwise.
Thanks for this!

Thank you both! Yes, it was a male t. But I've decided I'm keeping my current t for now. But if things get rocky with her again he is the backup plan.
