Now that the worst statement threads seem to have run their course, what about the strangest thing a therapist has ever said to you? Not necessarily a bad thing, just something that made you think they were loony, not of this planet, out of touch, etc., etc.

I'm pretty sure this one will turn out to be pretty tame, but mine is when No. 1 said to me that she couldn't be expected to remember things because her body's not producing the amount of estrogen it used to. Way to tell me you're in menopause, lady.

Mine used to constantly ask with a fake overly kind expression if i fancied him. I never did and have no idea why he kept asking.

Just to set things up...I'm an outdoorsy tomboy. In the 4 years I've been seeing my T, I've never worn make up, brought a bag other than a small hiking pack, worn anything other than scrubs or athletic /barn clothes and sneakers/barn boots. My hobbies are hiking, riding horses and hockey.

My T out of the blue excitedly asked me if I liked handbags/purses.
To which I replied "no. I've never owned one"
She proceeded to ask me about 3 or 4 brands of handbags and acted shocked that I had no idea what they looked like or why shed be interested in them.

I just stared at her and finally asked if maybe she'd confused me with someone else.

She insisted it was because of something id said about a leather bag. I had to clarify that that was a saddle bag. The kind you strap on a horse.

Weird is the only word for it.

Are you going to provide context for that? Otherwise I'm going to have to use my imagination...

I was 16 and talking about my boyfriend. And no, I was nowhere near...doing that...on his precious couch. He just didn't like me to talk about my boyfriend. It made him uncomfortable because my boyfriend was much older than me.

In retrospect, the relationship between me and this older man was horribly inappropriate but the therapist did not handle it well. Obviously.

" I'm a woman and I've let you down " - No , you're a Therapist and you've let me down - the fact that you're a woman is entirely immaterial. That didn't impress two other T's either - I knew I was right !

he asked me if i wanted to have an exorcism when i was in the midst of a very long delusion about me being possessed by my dead grandfather

also one time he asked me if was self harming through my cat

this one is a joke and u have to know the relationship between me and my T to know that i found it funny and not hurtful/offensive:
one sesssion during the winter T had his space heater on and i told him i was hearing voices thru the space heater/noise it was making. next session his space heater was still on and he asked if i was still hearing it and i said no. he said "that's because i took the speaker out of it"

One time we were playing rummy and he suddenly grabs a paper and a pen and starts scribbling down ratios. I said what are you doing? He said he was trying to figure out the probability of drawing the card he needs

Also, not exactly a T, but my old pdoc (of the pastel leather) used to say "fair enough" about a million times whenever I saw her.

At one point, when I was talking about a pain like a huge lump in my throat that keeps coming back and which I can relate to some early trauma, my therapist said something like the next step is throwing up ... then he proceeded to tell me how some clients of his (who he claims don't suffer from eating disorders) make themselves throw up. It almost seemed like a suggestion. I've never suffered from an ED, but I still found this highly inappropriate, particularly from a therapist. I mean, it's not like I had eaten something stale and felt nauseous or anything ...

T was talking about Transference and how using the couch helps the transference come out. He was giving suggestions of what he had been accused of by patients, being angry when he wasn't etc. He was illustrating how we project things on other people that aren't part of the reality of the situation. Then he said "I've even been accused of doing horrible things."

I said "I need details now."

He said "Once I was accused of gratifying myself. Like I can't wait."

Yup, awkward moment....

One T i saw (for one session, she was AWFUL) told me my mother 'looked like she had paranoid schizophrenia'. Wtf?! My mum had only said hello to her!! She also said that boys schools turn boys gay and that it was a bad thing, that if I wore makeup it meant I cared about myself, and that her son was a black belt in judo. I'm thinking of reporting her to the UKCCP

WTF, this woman is absurd. I would report her bigoted *** to the UKCCP. She needs some therapy herself.

A T I had to see when I was in the hospital told me she knew that I was schizophrenic because I had dyed my hair black and that's what schizophrenics do! What? My diagnosis was c-PTSD, dissociative and BP. My hair was black cause I was on a goth kick, this was the 00's.

J (my son) is entering middle school right. Ummm no he is entering high school. This was really weird because she is really good at remembering things. For the past few months we discussed school a lot. He had bullying problems the second semester. When he fought back he was nearly expelled ( he went to a private school). All we wanted was for him to finish middle school and we intended to send him to public high school as our public middle scool is horrible

Another one. She often talks about how hubby and i tend to proect each other often harming ourselfs. One day she started to say this then she stopped mid sentence. She said you know your marriage has lasted 20 years i couldn't make mine work beyond 2 years. So obviously it works f for you.
