Just as soon as I thought I found a good therapist, now I know I cannot trust her. When I told her about my ex boyfriend and what he does for a living, she said that it sounded like a previous client that she worked with. She later revealed that he used to see her for therapy and went into detail about why he was in therapy. I am devastated. One of my main issues that I'm trying to address are problems with my ex. Him and I are still in contact and care about each other.

Now I know that his previous therapist is my current therapist, which is a tough situation to be in, and I feel bad that I'm left knowing this. I can never trust her, because who is to say that she won't do the same thing to me and talk about my personal information to another client coming in? Also, I really did not want to know that she knew him, and she so freely gossiped about him. She tried to give me advice based on what she knew about him, which made me uncomfortable. I thought I had someone neutral I can talk to who was ethical. Now, I must look for a new therapist. It was completely unethical what she did, and I'm really upset that all she did was set me back further. Any similar experiences? How would you deal with this situation? Any input is appreciated. I feel my progress in treatment was negatively impacted because of all of this, and I'm back to square one.

Im sorry to hear that! I think it's highly unethical of your therapist. I would be looking for a new one

Unethical, even reportable if the therapist has a licensing board. Not sure how you would prove it.

Definitely a deal breaker. I'm sorry, I would have to terminate her.

Yep, I'd be leaving too - there are others who take their responsibilities seriously, you don't need to work with someone who can't keep confidentiality.
Thanks for this!

Confidentiality is paramount in therapy but she has made the therapeutic space very unsafe - I wouldn't be able to trust her.

That would definitely not be okay. Confidentiality is not optional. So sorry this happened and hope you will be able to find a more ethical therapist to work with. In this case, I would definitely let the therapist know exactly why you are leaving.
Thanks for this!

Thanks everyone. Today, I told her why I was leaving. She apologized and said she should have never done that. Too little, too late. I'm having problems with my insurance company finding a new therapist now, which is additional stress. Plus, my insurance is changing starting in October, but I definitely need to get in to see someone sooner. Hopefully I'll be able to figure something out. I see my Psychiatrist tomorrow. I plan on talking to her about this therapist's unethical behavior, and I'm hoping she'll help me with a referral. All I know is I'm not going back to this therapist...no way.

Good call!

Confidentiality is certainly not optional! It's an ethical violation at best!
Thanks for this!

I think therapists are allowed to talk about other situations in their therapy sessions but they're not allowed to reveal identities . Hopefully find a new therapist that is even better than this one.
