I don't mean other therapists, psychiatrists, or mental health professionals. I mean other professionals outside the mental health field.

No. 1 recommended a few divorce lawyers, her gastroenterologist, and a few gynecologists, including her own. (Ugh, no.)

No. 2 hasn't recommended anyone besides the psychiatrist.

No. 3 recommended a yoga studio and her massage therapist (better than a gynecologist, but still).

Psychiatrist recommended her gynecologist too (what is with these people thinking that I would want the same person giving pelvic exams to both me and them?)

Do you ever get professional recommendations from your therapist? Do you take them? I had one appointment with the gastroenterologist but decided she wasn't for me.
Thanks for this!

Not that I recall. I think he recommended a good butcher once though. Does that count? Oh, and a mechanic once. I voted no (which probably still applies I guess) but thought of these examples. Not sure they are the professionals you were thinking of though.

They have both offered names for various things and I have always refused. The first one has gotten info from me about agencies so she could give the info some other client. I should have charged her my hourly rate.

T recommended a training programme the same one she trained with. I was younger and naive then, looking back I should have left after the first weekend.

My option isn't there...I asked my therapist for recommendations for other doctors. She gave me some names, but I ultimately went with someone else. I gave my therapist the name of the doctors I went with so she could offer them as recommendations to others. Sometimes it's hard to find a GP that is understanding of mental health issues.

Yes, t2 that I saw only for a few months because there was no connection there at all (I didn't know that's why I quit going at the time, I know this after the fact) anyway I needed to find a gynecologist cuz I hadn't been to one yet and didn't want to just randomly pick one from an insurance list, so she suggested hers and I .did end up seeing him for a good while I think actually until I moved out of state.

current t has been suggesting for awhile that I get a deep tissue massage, but she never gave me any referrals. I ended up meeting a massage therapist at one of my drumming group events and that's where I went yesterday.

A massage therapist (not sure if she sees this person or not, doesn't really bother me) and a nutritionist. I need a trustworthy mechanic though!

Mine recommended a specific yoga class, but it's run by a therapist, so I said no. She also recommended a medical professional, but when I looked at the website, it was all geared toward an idea of what women look for, so it was all about "me time" and raising a family and things that don't not apply in my situation and turn me off because it's like they assume all women are mating breeder types weary from caretaking and needing a spa-like doctor's office while getting nails done or something.

She has also recommended other people and places, but I live in a different city, so it doesn't always work out for me that way, but I always appreciate the recommendations.
Thanks for this!

What is it with therapists wanting to be yoga instructors. Not doing yoga - which I understand -but it seems they are all instructors of it.

Not No. 2. The word "yoga" has never passed her lips in my hearing.

This may have been another reason I returned to her.

I consider that one of the better reasons to have

Ugh ugh ugh.......sharing gynecologists with your T? Oh gawd, no no no no no (that's me putting my hands on my ears and screaming). The very thought makes my stomach churn and brings up waves of nausea. Okay, I'll quit the drama right about here.

Former T -- never ever made any recs. I mean I can't imagine *any* conversation I could have with her where such a recommendation would come to pass her lips. So, if I hadn't met other Ts, I'd probably have first wanted to know how you guys ever managed to get to a conversational point where a T recommended anything / anyone.

But, I did have the experience of interviewing 3 Ts (not current T) who variously, in the very first session, insisted that I try yoga and group therapy (different Ts). I didn't end up going with any of them -- their recs only being symptoms of the manifest larger problems they had. Oh wait....that wasn't specific professional recs. So, I take that back -- perhaps, it would've evolved into specific recs had I continued (*shudder*....the thought!).

Current T hasn't offered any suggestion and I sorta kinda doubt she would (given her general style) unless I was really in dire straits.
Thanks for this!

Gynecological illness last year with possible gastroenterological links is how it came up with No. 1, and ongoing treatment for said illness is how it came up with the psychiatrist.

The only person who T really recommended were a couple of psychiatrists. I know we've talked about dentist, optometrist, etc., but I don't think any specific names came up. T and I try to live separate lives, but she has lived in the area a lot longer than I have so if T recommended a mechanic, dentist, electrician I would probably contact them and give them a chance. T and her family are known other ways in the community besides her being a therapist, such as church, public school, and university involvement, so if the person asked who recommended them I can use T's name without giving away that she's my therapist. Now gynecologist, T might recommennd 2-3, but if one was hers I'm pretty sure she wouldn't tell me. I would seriously consider going to see a gynecologist T recommends though since I'm not open about womanly issues.

She recommended the sleep study doc that I really like. Her partner has sleep apnea and she said this doctor was no nonsense and straightforward(which I like) but very personable too.

Based on how well I like the sleep doc I'd probably take another recommendation from her.

Not at all. The closest he has come is recommending a particular cake at his local deli (I always go to that deli anyway) and I tried it, and it was delicious, but so are all of their cakes.

I'm not sure if this counts at all, but my uni therapist recommended the riding school she used to teach at, so I went there to volunteer. I went a couple of times, but it ended up being impossible for me to make it a regular thing thanks to these borderline chronic migraines I've been having.

The previous owner is a good friend of my therapist's, but she has sold it to this other woman who had been an instructor there for about ten years or something before that (my therapist knew her as well), and I don't like the new owner much. I met my therapist's friend once (she helped bring in a new horse), and she was great. Shame she sold it.

My therapist has given me recommendations for a GP (mainly for meds, but I'm seeing her now for other things too) and for a yoga instructor and a shiatsu therapist. The latter two didn't work out because of schedules / location. I'm pretty happy with my GP though.

A former therapist many years ago recommended her romantic partner as a massage therapist, which I found to cross over into a shady sort of dual relationship area.

Long term current therapist is a male, so I'd be quite surprised (and a little creeped out) if he recommended a gynecologist.
